Do I really have to play all other Dragon Quest games to truly get DQXI?
All the previous ones are easily emulateable right?
Do I really have to play all other Dragon Quest games to truly get DQXI?
Yes.
Don't play any of them. Turn based RPGs are boring and have no place in the 21st century.
No, you really don't. In fact playing otjer DQ games will undermine the experience with DQ11, since they are all the same JRPG shit and you'll get a burn out past the first/second one.
Meanwhile you probably think Witcher 3 is a good game, despite the horrendously boring combat with much, much less strategy than even DQ.
No. But you should start with Dragon Quest 1, you can finish it in 4 hours at the most or so on phone. Honestly, if you like this game you will like the others, if you absolutely loathe this game you will find MAYBE some of the modern games nice or interesting but I doubt you will love the series, in which case just play other games.
>truly get
I guess it depends on what you mean by this.
Story wise the games pretty much unconnected and can be played in any order
I would start with 5 or 8 but 11 isn't a bad choice either honestly
I disagree and think you are a faggot!
Kinda it has a few references and call backs, its not necessary to "get it" though.
But at the same time its the most causal by far, so it'd be good for a beginner. And theres also the fact that like 90% of discussion about DQ on here is about it specifically, so if you want to play the others first you're going to be outta luck for a while.
So all that being said, I would say you might as well play it first. You would hardly be the first person to and in the end it doesnt matter all that much.
And yeah all the others are emulatable.
Not really, it's only loosely connected to the first 3 games, but only loosely. You should play them anyway cause they're all pretty great to this day. 1, 2 and 3 have remakes on the SNES, you should play them. 4, 5, 6 and 9 are on the DS, 7 on the 3DS and 8 on the 3DS/PS2. 10 is an MMO, so ignore it.
The only game it shares any story ties to is III, but it's set up as a pseudo prequel so you don't need to play it first.
>Do I really
I'm not convinced that anyone told you this. Just play the game. It's not a sequel. It's not a remake or reboot. It's just another game in the entry.
It’s a style choice, not a limitation of technical systems. Don’t play it if you don’t like it.
No. Who told you that? The 400-600 hours you dump in to those isn’t going to make 11 that much better man.
The one thing you would "truly get" by doing that is that the series has barely changed, mechanically and story wise.
Literally all the Dragon Quest games are standalone except for some of them happening in the same world, but centuries apart.
Dragon Quest 1, 2, 3 and 11 are in the same world, but all centuries apart from each other.
Dragon Quest 4, 5 and 6 are similar.
Rest are completely unrelated.
You'll miss the true impact of DQ11's ending and some story elements if you haven't played DQ3 and you'll again miss some story elements if you haven't played DQ1.
Chronology (not release order) of 1/2/3/11 tetralogy is as follows:
DQ11 -> DQ3 -> DQ1 -> DQ2
bro noone said anything about the witcher 3. bad day?
playing all the main DQ games including XI will make you appreciate the excellent hentai games more
Nope. This was my first proper one and all of it made perfect sense. Though the ending kinda took me by surprise and has made me want to play all of them.
It's like Final Fantasy.
Sure, are playing though every FF game you will be familiar with magic terms or the numbers of holy beasts but they bear little to the overall story or setting. Well, mostly because the world of Ivalice is often used.
Same with Dragon Quest. So don't worry and just jump right in. You don't need to "get" the references of the magic names because english localization has fucked it up beyond recognition.
no it's simply the perfect game to show the hypocrisy of turn-based hating adhd fucks
The definitive versions of 1 and 2 are on hacked Switch now that the sprite fixes exist.

this is the best JRPG ever made
No, you don't have to play any of the previous games to understand what's going on in DQXI. The story is pretty self-contained. However there are a few characters that are from previous games and a few references to the old games. It's basically something that'll make you smile if you know/remember that, something that you'll gloss over if you don't.
Also, play DQXI. It's really fucking good.
Playing ten other boring games won’t make the 11th any less boring. And I say this as someone who loves JRPGs. It’s really not a good game.
It’s not even top twenty. It’s not even top five of its year of release.
Just play 4,5, and 7 those are the peak of the series
This is fucking untrue I started the series in December with DQ1 and am playing through DQ11 now after playing 1-9.
sauce?
>it’s not even top five of its year of release
>No No Kuni 2
>Nier Automata
>Persona 5
>Atelier Sophie
>Blie Reflection
All superior JRPGs
Faggot cropped the title bar but you can still make it out.
>7
I think you meant 8 user. 7 would make him never want to try another game in the series.
leave it to the ESL to have the shittiest opinion in this thread.
good eye user thanks
I don't understand people who think like this. Turn based is one of the best ways to do easy-to-approach strategic combat. If you aren't retarded you can normally find items and builds which trivialize the combat anyway so it's not like it's a huge issue if you don't like it.
Not only that but so many fucking amazing games use turned based combat, I can't help but look at it fondly. Final Fantasy, KoTOR 1&2, Pokemon, Chrono Trigger, XCOM, Dragon Quest, Fire Emblem, Earthbound, Persona, I could go on and on and on.
Like seriously, how FUCKED does your taste have to be to not enjoy turn based games?
Small references here and there but handled well that if you don't get it the game is still very much enjoyable.
