MAL is easy to use, community friendly, it just werks and more importantly the website layout gets out of the way instead of getting in your way. MAL is the Amazon of lists. I don't even watch anime anymore, but I remember the website being top notch. Anilist is fucking crap. The layout is terribly useless. Compare MAL's frontpage to Anilist's frontpage.
