I liked Barret's characterization. Even though it ruined the original story, I enjoyed the scene where he finally confronts President Shinra and holds him over the edge of the tower.

AVALANCHE being a much greater organization is dumb.
The whole arc at Jessie's house was not very interesting nor did it really enhance her character since they just made her an annoying thot anyway.
Aeris evacuating Midgar is dumb.
The whole "kings of the wall market" thing was really dumb, especially when you get chummy with them later on for sidequests even though Chocobo Sam is still a human trafficker.
I don't understand the Wutai war angle at all, since the whole point of Wutai in the original is that they're already literally and figuratively defeated which is the drive behind Yuffie's whole character. I don't think they needed to give Yuffie a whole new backstory.
I really hate Chadley, and tying him together with Hojo did not make him any more interesting or justified to exist.
Making Deepground canon to the original game only sets up even more stupidity later. Dirge of Cerberus is so shit.

It's like everything we've done to improve lighting, effects and textures have been to the benefit to everything except bathrooms in games. We got really good at rendering dense forests, cluttered slums, and bombed out battlefields but the challenges in rendering a bathroom have only amplified with time, because all the tricks we've used to improve everything else fold when placed under bright lights and in front of a mirror.

Also, I forgot the worst one. The Sector 1 bombing being a falseflag is just terrible. Anyone who says the original implied as much needs to replay it, because it totally doesn't. Barret coming to terms with his actions and how he mirrors Dyne is like the most important part of his entire character. Taking that away makes it so much stupider. Yes, imagined guilt is still guilt, but there's no reason to make it that way, since it really shows how far he was willing to go at the beginning of the game.

I can't because there is literally not a single thing that the remake changed that improved upon the original in any meaningful way.
They could've spent all that huge amount of extra time in Midgar expanding the story in a genuinely interesting way, enabling you to explore all the other sectors you never went to in the original game, but instead it was padded the fuck out with the most stupid fucking shit Nomura and Nojima time jannie bullshit piece of shit story.
