How did Catarina even function? Their Knights are shit, you spend 1 & 3 saving their clumsy asses. All heart, no skill.

>he doesnt know
You could ask the same thing of any country existing today.
That's the point.
They were an ethnically homogeneous high-trust nation that didn't need overbearing policing.
>Their Knights are shit
Sieglinde got around Lordran in one life, and her father traversed it so much he was hard for her to find. It's easy to imagine they could hold their own in a fight. In DS3 you get to fight with their descendant and he's strong as fuck.
>didn't need overbearing policing
>guards needing put in jail because they're always drunk off their asses
but you need to save his ass in 1 and you have save his descendants ass in 3. Neither of them make it without you
Siegward is based and helps you out with Fire Demon and Yhorm though?
this is fanart retard
damn good fanart at that
>but you need to save his ass in 1 and you have save his descendants ass in 3
You only speed up his progress in one, and he helps you in 3. Even still, considering how much the average player needs help, they're not exactly the worst out there. If all of them were as good as the siegs you'd have a pretty good army.
It'd be cool if the souls games were like Dragon's Crown where you could unlock pictures for doing certain things.
You shut the fuck up you souless excuss for a knight!
The Siegs are ideal knights. They plunge heroically into danger with scarcely a thought for themselves, and are always kind and willing to help someone in need.
Siegmeyer is a fucking genius, he just waits for the chosen undead to solve all his problems and he doesn't even move a finger. Also, he has the most useful miracle in the game.
in DaS1 you need to make sure he ends a fight with >50% or he wont progress to the final location.
So what if they both need help? Chosen Undead needed Oscar to break him out of the Asylum.
You're really, REALLY goddamn strong. Siegmeyer never explicitly needs saving outside of the very end in Izalith where he's basically begging for an honorable death and using the chaos eaters as proxy for that. You COULD say that you save Siegward twice, one from Patches and one from the Irithyll prison, but even getting to that point is quite something. And like user said, Sieglinde is great.
For what is worth, in 3 Catarina is basically the only nation we don't hear as having degenerated into ruin and misery like all the rest bar the Great Swamp, that was ALREADY ruined and miserable to begin with. Their knights' whole schtick in lore really basically is "competent and proud and noble, but goofy-looking because we made their armor based on a japanese pun involving onions having some sort of connection to greenhorns"
i wish people didn't choke on the idea souls games should be discovery for such little lore gain. i want actual world building content.
To be fair, it seemed like he was sacrificing himself, so it's not like he jumped in there expecting to win. He's also seemingly pretty old, so that's a pretty good success ratio. Not many people could hold their own against that many chaos demons in a toxic pit.
DS lore is way better than any average "worldbuilding" setting, it's mysterious, gives a very good atmosphere and since it's a super ambiguous setting allows lots of shit that are amazing to play (places, gameplay mechanics, interesting stories, etc.)
Once I get my stats high enough to be able to not fat roll with it, the full Catarina armour is the only armour I use in every single Souls game.
What, concrete things like peoples, places, stuff like that? We get a pretty fleshed out picture of the world as a whole, I don't know what it is you feel is missing from a worldbuilding standpoint, user. Maybe a historical progression? Something like "in the year XXX Catarina went to war against Vinheim because X Y and Z"
You better be using that stabby onion buckler and a zweihander, too, Anonymous.
Yeah but that's just imitation of Siegward, I feel like using any lore-friendly Catarina knight weapon would be fine for a Catarina knight build.
Grass crest shield and Astora Greatsword I'm afraid
Something tells me that the actual skilled knights of Catarina don't have to go on some stupid quest to prove how good they are and stayed home.
Probably they are all hollow by the time of the events of DS1.
Whats your favorite RP build lads? Specific characters or just lore based.
Right now I'm doing an Artorias run. I kept reading about it being overdone but in my 1k+ hours in DaS3 I've encountered a pure Artorias build... twice. I've been going through the game at lvl 27 with a weapon upgrade lvl 2 so I can get all his gear and do the Watchdog Covenant stuff LARPing as him (not twinking, I'll be levelling up afterwards once I've gotten the watchdog rewards).
Dancer was a pain at that kinda low level.
but look how far they made it compared to the rest of the world. 99.9% of the population is fucked and the onion knights are trucking along. sure the player saves them like some other npcs buy they are still around and kicking while everyone else went hollow or just straight up got defeated/crushed
I used to cosplay as paladin Leeroy and helping people out in the catacombs, good times.
the player character is helped by various npcs throughout each game. in fact the stars may as well be aligned for the player character
You absolutely don't want to save Siegmeyer or he'll die in Lost izalith. He needs to fight alongside you. In other scenarios he's never in danger, he is just thinking his way through.
Sieglinde is fucking amazing and basically kills Yhorm the giant for you.
