but yes, ps2 gow really only had the presentation going for them, everything else was absolute trash especially the gameplay which is kind of important for an action game

What does "barely have a story" mean? It does have a story.
I mean presentation, anything not directly related to gameplay. Story, characters, soundtrack, set pieces, art design, animation, etc. GOW does not beat NG in all these things but it does beat it decidedly in some without being a slouch in the others either. Even though i said it was not related to gameplay it does help to elevate it and it's something i feel NG always downplayed to it's detriment. A good example is setting up boss fights. Ares is a compelling villain and the narrative makes sure to enforce that all the way until your confrontation with him, the game "hypes" the fight up. Even though Doku is very similar in the sense that the main character is also out for revenge after suffering personal loss at the hands of him, the game puts so little emphasis on this that i honestly forgot he was the main antagonist until his boss fight.
