they're still working on it but 1. Kamiya is not director, 2. the guy who directed 2 is gone, and 3. Platinum basically took a break in development to pivot based on DMC5's success. Actually even before then, Kamiya saw DMC5 during development at Capcom and was blown away. It's why he made all those weird tweets about getting a realistic DMC title. Basically they're revamping Bayonetta's visual style and animation quality to compete.
