Yes there is online matchmaking.
The complaint you probably saw was that if you want to queue up for random online games you have to pick 3 games and it'll find someone out of the 3 games, I believe in the order you picked. So if you pick checkers, gomoku, boxing, it'll look for checkers. If nobody is playing that then it'll look for gomoku, again if nobody is playing then boxing.
Besides the basic and mario and whatever was in the trailer no.
We'll see once it comes out, and there could be content updates
