Will there ever be another 4x game with good writing like SMAC?

Yes.

Because Yang was right

I really wish this game wasn't constantly forcing me into faction wars I give no fucks about. I just want to do research and alien shit, fuck your imperialism.

Technically Diedre was right, although she's nothing more than some dumb vegan thot who's only right entirely by chance.

You research must be stopped!

stop trying to sell cyborgs you fuck

What do you guys want to see for a Smac successor? other than the basic shit like unit designer, actual good factions and square grid.

Hard to think about what I really want, probably more resources, and better orbital gameplay.

Dierdre and Zakharov were both right, and they teamed up in the end to awaken Planet and ascend humans to their next stage of evolution
Every other leader is retarded

Good story. its not just the faction play but those wonders and the moral questions which arise from building something like Self-Aware colony to get that sweet sweet maintenance reduction only to get a homicidal AI like Terraforming. the ability to raise mountain thus altering rainfall pattern, turning enemy lands into deserts and your lands into lush green areas was great in SMAC. I just wish the AI would react to this because in SMAC they're completely apathetic. Ability to drown enemy cities was fun too.

and I dont care about square grid, it can be hex for all I care.

>Sakharov awakens to planet

Lol no. He hates planet, despises fungus and systematically tries to wipe it out.

Not at all suspect

Good story and terrain deformation are givens, absolute key to the success of SMAC, there's a reason why it hasn't been surpassed in the space of 2 decades in spite of technology having gone far beyond what was doable when Smac came out.

Square grid is better than Hex for terrain deformation, I'd say it's necessary for what Smac does, I prefer it to Civ, I just wish that wind didn't flow in one direction. Actually ideally I'd love to see the terrain be built on a spherical cube so that you can freely walk on the poles, but then you need to deal with those awkward corner connections.

Your faction agenda conflicts with other's factions.
Morgan doesn't like Yang nor Deidre, Zakharov and Miriam both hate each other and Lal is just Lal.
Also both Santiago and Yang hate everyone and love war, specially Santiago.
If you want peace then just give them what they want and try to make amends.

>Good story and terrain deformation are givens
Besides that there is full unit customization, Secondary combat stats(PSI) and Social policies that literally changes how you play the game.

Throw in special barbarian units and hostile terrain (fungus) that can be improved or be exploited with technology and relics that always give you a new technology when you cash them and you got a good game in your hands,

It also helps that SMAC is extremely quick compared to Civ, Games rarely last 200 turns.

Only downside of the story is that it forces you pretty hard into the "Let the worms take over humanity, because they whispered sweet nothings into your head," ending.

>games rarely last 200 turns
I must be playing it wrong.

What's with that UI, pray tell? I mean by turn 300 you have all techs and it's only a matter of spamming units or complete Ascent, depending of what you want to do.

>by turn 300 you have all the techs
I'm definitely playing it wrong.

>What's with that UI, pray tell?
That's a build for I think E3 1998, it shows more factions, and everything is spritework instead of pre rendered like the final game. The Fungus actually looks more like it does in the cinematics there too.

>S.S. on mind and matter
Was the chairman secretly a nazi?

I think you can set up a Scenario game with just 1 faction (ie. just you), and disable all victory conditions except Transcendence (the "research everything" victory). That way your game is just you building cities, growing your population, doing science, and defending yourself from mindworms.

Just play with the addon and random faction than you get Pirates and weird aliens.

It says Essays on Mind and Matter not SS.
And no he is a commie.

I keep hearing horror stories about Miriam, and while she is always agressive and expansive, she always eventually loses that tech race, and the moment you go from defense to offensive is end of her most of the time.
For me it's always Lal who manages to build crazy huge empire covering half of the planet and housing huge population.
Santiago is annoying too and she's my elast fav character, but with Lal I always struggle most, majority of the time at least.

>santiago is my elast fav
She's easily one of my favourites, when I was young I liked Morgan, Zakahrov and Diedre, now I like Santiago and Morgan, the rest can all go fuck themselves. Flexibility is key to surviving an alien world and might makes right, on the flip side a strong emphasis on personal freedoms as well as the incentivizing fast economic growth as well as weeding out those who simply can't survive is another good take on how we should approach life on a hostile alien world.
>lal's cumbersome beauracracy and grasping at irrelevant rules is a joke
>the human hives push to turn everyone into cogs in an ever expanding machine effectively killing off any humanity whatsoever is fuck off tier
>diedre is a complete and utter retard who thinks that she can trust her own thoughts regarding worms that can enter her fucking mind and is thust mentally defficient
>zhakarovs science for science sake with no regard for actual application or anything resembling ethics is dangerous
>miriam is a broken clock who would rather people be the boot on your back rather than an android even if there is no other difference between the too, and clinging to a god who is now completely irrelevant is delusion at it's best

Androids aren't even people, just people-shaped robots.
Cyborgs were people, but arguably lose their humanity as well when you get into brain augmentations. Will someone who has lived longer as a cyborg than as a natural human retain their empathy toward their meatier counterparts?
Also they don't have peepees so cyborg bad.

Consider the following;
What ethics do Morgan and Santiago espouse? What do they sacrifice in the pursuit of their chosen virtues?
Furthermore, your criticisim of Zakharov is hollow, no political leader would maintain power solely by serving the "science" agenda or some nebulous ethical framework.
The goal is power, gained by hook or crook.
