Square is a former shell to what it is today
What the fuck went wrong?
How did Squaresoft fall so fucking hard?
videogames went wrong, square is just doing what game companies do
Because they lost Monolithsoft.
But user....
Their best games and innovation come from the PS1 era.
Squaresoft is not Square-Enix no matter how much you want them to be.
they became too big in the PS2 era, tried too hard to appeal to too many people and ended up pleasing nobody, released FF13 and FF15 - two games that go from reviled to "eh" - and their last saving graces, FF7R and Kingdom Hearts, are mediocre success at best and don't even reach 15 sales. I think it's clear that square is currently catapulted out of the mainstream again and will eventually stop being a big name, and once that happens we can probaly expect more quality from them as they focus on their otaku/nerd/anime audience more and start experimenting/innovating with their franchises again. Nier Automata is the future of Square, not FF
Merged with Enix. It's been downhill since.
Their Final Fantasy ended up not being final.
Spirits Within.
Monolith is made up of most people who made Xenogears.
>NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO NOT THE HECKIN AMANO ART NOT THE SOULFUL SQUARE ART GOOD BOY
Cringe, those games looked and played like shit even back then regardless of whatever designer they picked to trick you into thinking you were playing some sort of high art.
God I love Amano Yoshitaka's work but.... all his guys look the same!
This. If they just didnt spend so much money on this stupid movie.
This. Both companies published amazing games but post merge, as a single entity, they really went downhill
You can't really blame the fall of an entire company on one person. But in this case it really is entirely Nomura's fault. His terrible fucking visions have held square hostage for two fucking decades now.
Really crazy how Amano and Uematsu managed to fool an entire generation of people into thinking Final Fantasy was good.
how did DQ go downhill since the merger? only the squaresoft side is terrible, and it has nothing to do with enix because enix doesn't influence how the core SE games are made.
They wasted an entire console generation and then some on the spectacular failure that was the Fabula Nova Crystallis concept. Seriously take a look back and see just how fucking long XIII was in the works for. It bombed so amazingly hard after they were so stupid as to put that many resources into it that they had literally no choice but to asset flip it to hell and back and churn out two sequels with DLC out the ass, and at the same time they managed to fuck up XIV so badly that they had to apologize for it's awful quality and let everyone who bought it play it with no sub fee until they remade it from the ground up.
If it wasn't for XIV's re-launch propping them up with retarded MMO-subscriber money they would've died years ago. The sheer idiocy on display from SE during that time is just astounding.
>What the fuck went wrong?
You grew up, or maybe you didn't.
Also, that's a G-Craft game, not a Square game.
Except with Final Fantasy 9
And Chrono Cross
The enix merger and alot of incompetent management who've stayed in power too long. Also I think their success in the 4th-5th gen bred alot of hubris that still carries on to today. It's honestly a miracle the FF7 remake turned out okay given their track record for the last 13 years or so..
DQ games are still polished and well done, but where's the good stuff that's not DQ?
they used to publish weird, different stuff that cluld be good.
Off the top of my head, there’s TWEWY, both Niers, SaGa: Scarlet Graces, Bravely Default, and Trials of Mana 3
Square Soft and Sakaguchi Hubris in the development and failure of Final Fantasy:The Spirit Within:
en.m.wikipedia.org
Bonus point, it killed a new episod of Xenogears and some other proyects:
Even tranniERA acknowlod this.
Just don't bother, these people's narrative is that Squenix only makes FF that flop despite selling millions and that no other franchise exists, outside of maybe Taro's shit and DQ.
It's always just butthurt FF manchildren.
Are they still led by a guy who goes to fortune tellers for business advice?
Sakaguchi left, and the reins passed onto the hands of people who were nowhere as suited for it
Given how Squenix is making loads of cash while Mystwalker made nothing but flops and is now barely even on life support, I have to question that.
You constantly bringing up DQ like a shining beacon of how good something can be is just further proof of how far they've fallen. DQ was always mediocre as fuck, in a genre known for creating masterpieces like Terranigma, Chrono Trigger and FF6 on an assembly line.
Same annon here, another misstep was the Dark time at late 2000 and early 2010 when Tabata, Nomura and Kitase only want to work and relase their own fanfiction-tier garbage that only they want like FF XIII.
>You constantly bringing up DQ
No?
I don't even like DQ.
>in a genre known for creating masterpieces like Terranigma, Chrono Trigger and FF6
>That garbage
>Masterpieces
Thanks for the giggle m8
