Why didn't they call it Christ Warrior? You pray and confess to save your game. They already feature and mention God, crosses.
Final Fantasy on the other hand has very fedora-tipping God killing narratives and outright hatred of the Church. Final Fantasy 7 you're saving the planet from a corporation and killing a soldier that became a god. They reference the planet's life energy throughout so can say the game is more Shinto than Christian
Honestly it was because of DQ7. Not that DQ7 was a bad game but westerners who got into the genre for the first time with FF7 wanted polygons and pretty pictures to run around on top of.

>Final Fantasy 7 >anti-religious in any way LMAO Funny thing is that Xenogears’ story was offered as a concept for FFVII, but it was turned down. Now that game is fedora at its finest. Final boss was even supposed to be named Yahweh but they changed it because of the western market.
I think it's a very great looking game. Mighty huge too. I love how they basically transitioned 2d sprites over to 3d polygons and the environment gains more depth when you rotate the screen. FF7 on other hand of course had big ad campaign and advanced cg for cutscenes. But the jpg backgrounds and low poly models were more dated looking. It's more the angle they pput the camera in for scenes in ff7 that adds the more "wow" factor

Dragon Quest doesn't look badass. Your box art comparison is evident. The chibi midget kid models on left don't sell the game enough
Nathan Martinez
What about pokemon's success? and dragon ball in general?
Nathaniel Murphy
no, dragon quest is unpopular because it is boring safe shit that never pushes their boundaries.
Jonathan Price
This is stupid bait but it broaches an interesting topic.
JRPGs were carried by being the first big cinematic games. While action titles were more focused on being action games and you got the story out of an instruction manual, JRPGs had lots of dialogue and character scenes. Final Fantasy 6 opens with that tracking shot of Terra in her mechasuit marching through the snow, the raid, Locke and the moogles helping her escape. Final Fantasy 7's advertising was all the FMVs and pre-rendered backgrounds, and opened with the bombing mission setpiece.
Meanwhile, DQ7 on the PS1 was barely indistinguishable from its SNES counterparts while FF7-9 and titles like Tekken had its elaborate FMVs. People wanted polygons and movies, not the lowkey presentation and grindan of Dragon Quest.
That's why JRPGs stopped being competitive during Gen 7. It wasn't enough to be pretty, to be a showcase of what the console could do. Shooters and action games could render these elaborate cutscenes in the game engine, and have you play through these big explosive moments rather than having you watch a pre-rendered video, then sticking you into a battle screen where your team stands in a row and takes turns slapping at the enemy. Who gives a shit about Final Fantasy XIII? We gotta save Whiskey Hotel from the Russians!
In a way, Dragon Quest staying strictly formula allowed it to weather these issues calmly while Final Fantasy is a fucking punchline.
That renoir rivette interview pic is so disingenuous and full of shit defending escapism. The point of further realism is to get closer to how it feels to be human and explore the human condition in all facets. Movies haven't ever reached that yet, no medium has yet. Games have the possibility to though for giving you control of your character and getting immersed in first-person/third-person

Pokemon had a lot of attractive qualities despite the limited presentation of the Game Boy.
>look at this world filled with all these cool monsters >holy shit this cute ass lizard becomes a giant winged dragon, and this little turtle becomes a big ass turtle with water cannons on its shoulder >you can capture and train these monsters >we're not done yet, faggot, fight and trade them with your friends!
Had all the shit kids liked. Collecting(just the latest in an obsession of collecting shit like pogs, baseball cards, etc.), interacting with friends, badges that concretely illustrated progress, completing a pokedex, competitive elements
Parker Ramirez
I see what you're trying to do, but just because those 2 are loosely related aesthetically does not translate anything to what people play games for....um GAMEPLAY?
Jose Johnson
Most people who play Final Fantasy didn’t even know what Dragon Quest was before Smash, let alone that you save your game in churches. It has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with being flashy. That sort of thing just attracts more people
Caleb Jones
Dragon Quest never hardly got a chance in the west because its localization was poorly handled from the beginning. For one thing you got Enix releasing Dragon Warrior I in the west much later, by the time FF1 was already out iirc. They finally got caught up after DW4 but then fucked up any momentum they may have had by not releasing DQ5, 6, or the 3 remake in the west on Super Nintendo, and the latter two were pretty good looking, polished games for the record. The series was pretty much dead in the water when DW7 released. It was with DQ8 they finally decided to give DQ a solid marketing campaign and, lo and behold, it actually worked.
Owen Murphy
that's a disingenuous argument.
Andrew Bennett
Jesus whats with the "Final Fantasy bad other JRPGs Good." today?
Christian Hughes
But Final Fantasy is bad, and other JRPGs are good.
Jaxon Parker
Your box art comparison did the opposite, guy. Just makes me want to replay og ff7.
I might bust out ps1 too, just got a pvm recently
Noah Gutierrez
>JRPGs were carried by being the first big cinematic games.
this is false. and would it kill people to just admit people like them for their stories and gameplay?
James Perez
DBZ was cool. DQ is more like og DB with silly shit everywhere
Jayden Stewart
but....but all the time that Ive put into Final Fantasy just to be bad?
William Harris
Yes.
Cameron Ortiz
Oh nnnoooooo man what am i going to do? Should I end it all?
Elijah Garcia
Can you recommend some good Christian games besides Doom and Devil May cry?
Jayden Barnes
Castlevania
Ryan Long
The Binding of Issac AfterBirth not +
Colton Flores
Spiritual Warfare
Cameron Hughes
No, stop blaming us for everything
Brody Sanders
Imagine you are 9 years old at the blockbuster and have nothing but the cover art on those two games to go on. Which one do you pick?
Levi Robinson
This game is too hard and is kicking my ass. Any tips on how to git gud? I find the prayer mechanic a little tedious desu.
>Is Christianity the reason Dragon Quest is unpopular in the West? Probably. But it's also why Dragon Quest is still to this day one of the best video game series ever made.
Evan Price
i always heard this game mentioned in classic ps1 rpg lists, but i don't know anything about it. Can you share details?
Nolan Reed
I don't remember it being all that hard but in general you should stock up on vials. In tight areas it's best to drop a few in an enemy's path and blow em up with the fruit from a distance. This is also the strat you wanna use against most bosses. It should get a lot easier for you once you beat the second boss and get the Breastplate.
Jason Wood
Not to mention the screenshots on the back, mostly from the CGI for FF7 and shit tier visuals for DQ7.
