Risky’s Revenge is bad and repetitive because it was a DSIWare game, the download size limit on those was only 16MB, hence all the crazy backtracking.
But the game acts as a prologue to Pirate's Curse (which is the best Shantae game) so it's still worth playing. And it's only like 4 hours anyway, just power through it.

Looking back, I enjoyed it even less than HGH. It's a very safe game with little content to speak of. You go through a bunch of caverns, fight 6 bosses and that's it.

I think what sold the new one more for me was the ability for exploration in a metroidvania-styled map.
I also like the different ways to approach the game with monster cards.

I mean, it's cool that it's a metroidvania but there's so little tileset variety and so many similar looking rooms that I wish it was just a straightforward platformer instead.

Oh, I didn't mean to say you were wrong. Just wanted to add my perspective on the game. I personally didn't like HGH a whole lot until they added the other modes. When they released the pajama and such the game got a whole lot more fun.
