Worse than Xenogears, but only because you have to spend half the game without your giant robots and even when you get your robots, they're weaker than just fighting on foot with an infinite overdrive combo. In Gears the robots were always stronger than you were on foot. Still better than most other RPGs, you know, all the ones without pilotable Giant Robots in them.

I'll take X to Gears any day if we're talking about utilizing mechs. In gears mech combat is extremely boring when ground combat has death blows.

So you prefer Gears because in Gears you have robots pretty much the entire game, in X you only get the robots half way through the game. You even got that cool battling arena minigame in Gears.
