Dungeon Defenders have the tower defense and the RPG mechanics, but no open world.
Terraria sort of have this "open world RPG with some tower defense shit" thing going on, but invasions aren't really frequent and you can avoid the issue by simply staying away from your base during the event and building a "death trap base" somewhere else to deal with the invaders and collect the loot.
