You could make a good case that AC4, J&D, MGS2, Silent Hill 2 and GTA III weren't outdone by their successors.
GT3 is also well liked but I never played it. Dunno how well regarded it is in that fanbase.

i mean to play the full library would be insane but that doenst change most people don't have original hardware and even if you did emulate it would look terrible on a modern display because games on the ps2 were designed with a crt
