But the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 seems like dogshit. Should I just watch those on youtube, and emulate 3 and 4, and play 5 on PC?
I want to get into the Metal Gear franchise
You faggot Zoomer play MGS1 and 2.
I’d start with 3 and maybe play 4 and 5 after if your interested.
MGS 1 and 2 have really good gameplay MGS3 is so fondly remembered because it's the first MGS game that actually managed to fuse its gameplay and storytelling together rather than the incomprehensible messes of 1 and 2
Yes, skip 1 and 2, they are the best games so make sure you skip ahead to 5.
you're a fucking fag if you skip any main line game in a franchise like this.
>I want to play LESS video games.
Actually, no. Don't bother playing these. They're not for you.
how so? can you detail please? Genuinely asking, because I didnt play it yet, but from what I've watched of the gameplay, it seems like just a pretty bad stealth game. I get it, it invented the genre, but still, I feel like Thief, Dishonored, even fucking Deus Ex has better stealth.
Honestly MGS1 is one of the best playing games on the PS1. A lot of PS1 games feel super dated control wise but MGS1 is still fairly competent
Just what exactly was incomprehensible about MGS1?
don't let these weirdos get to you man. I asked Zig Forums once which game to play in the series if I only wanted to play one of them and they jumped down my throat.
MGS1 is stiff in todays standard, but still enjoyable.
MGS2 is tight as fuck
MGS3 Subsistance adds camera movement which is handy for newfags.
MGS4 have good but stiff gameplay, but I hate the theme of sand niggerland. Except for one location that forced me to tears when "that" started playing.
I played the pc port of 1 for the first time a couple years ago on a keyboard, it was awful but also amazing, you should definitely play them all
The MGS saga is an inconsistent mess and as far as I know every retcon has a set of problems. OP will be fine by playing MGS3 if he wants to.
>wait until he hears about Metal Gear 1 and Metal Gear 2......
>Should I play this game? Or watch someone play it?
Idk how do you like your sex OP?
You don't understand what MGS is since you never played it, your perception is based off of more recent stealth games. These are not just stealth games these are 'arcade' stealth games, if you think pic releated is outdated/dogshit then don't bother you won't enjoy it. It's top down for a reason.
Also you can't watch a video game, you either play it and experience for yourself or watch someone else experience it.
Start with MGS3
go back to MGS1 and MGS2
avoid MGS4 like the plague
read the MGSPW wiki
watch the MGSV trailers
play MGSV
complaing about MGSV on Zig Forums
People on Zig Forums are contrarian fags OP, don’t listen to them. MGS 1 and 2 are clunky and dated in their controls, but still fun. I’d watch a playthrough of Metal Gear 1 and 2 for the MSX because they’re fairly short and fairly significant to the overall plot of the game. I’d suggest playing MGS1 and 2, but if you’re gonna skip any of the mainline games skip MGS1 and watch it online.
If you want to get the story of the first game without playing it, I'd recommend watching the dub of the Digital Graphic Novel. It's pretty good bar Gray Fox who sounds like a cheap Shonen antagonist, but that fits his character. I haven't seen Metal Gear Solid 2: Bande Dessinée yet, but if it's as good as the first comic dub you should watch that too.
Why watch a game like MGS 1 instead of playing it? Do you really think you're getting the same experience watching someone else play? Stealth games are all about tension and level layout, both those things lose all impact when you have no input on them. So why are you saying this?
MGS1 is great by PS1 standards, the only parts I get frustrated at are the sniper sections. Give it a go, if you really can’t get through it I’d suggest Twin Snakes. It ruins the balance of the game but it’s much smoother. Biggest downside is the cutscenes are terrible and the VA is worse, but it’s still pretty good.
MGS2 has some of the smoothest gameplay I have ever experienced. I don’t know how you could criticise MGS2 for its gameplay, it’s brilliant.
Are you talking about Metal Gear 1 or Metal Gear Solid 1?
Metal gear isn’t a series like dark souls or DmC where 90% of the experience is the gameplay itself. If someone wants to get an overall understanding of the plot and events of the original games, see the boss fights, listen to the codec calls then a silent playthrough is perfectly fine. OP can still experience MGS3 and onward himself without missing out on that much of the experience.
Once you get used to controls, MGS1 becomes fun.
I suggest trying some VR missions to really get the hang of it.
if the games look like dogshit then dont play them retard cocksucker
no, it's not the same.
>I want to get into the Metal Gear franchise
Play in the release order.
>But the gameplay of Metal Gear Solid 1 and 2 seems like dogshit.
You're wrong.
Play ALL the games. In release order.
>and emulate 3 and 4, and play 5 on PC?
No. Play all the games, in release order.
Don't skip Peace Walker, but do skip MGSV.
>Should I just watch those on youtube
I fucking hate you zoomer faggots so much. If you don't like playing games, then get a different hobby.
"Metal gear isn’t a series like dark souls or DmC where 90% of the experience is the gameplay itself"
It's just as 'game-y' as those games, you can't just write off every level in MGS 1 as not an integral part of the experience.
" If someone wants to get an overall understanding of the plot and events of the original games"
How can you care about a plot if you have no involvement in it?What makes you think OP will give a flying fuck about the Genome soldiers if he wasn't interacting with them the entire game, or the Foxhound bosses for that matter. At that point just watch a James Bond film to see a spy sneaking around taking out guards and villains what's the difference.
> see the boss fights
"OP can still experience MGS3 and onward himself without missing out on that much of the experience."
MGS 4 is over the top fan fiction for the fanbase, do you really OP will care about anything in that game without playing 1 and 2?
You should stop comparing MGS to every other game, and accept that it is its very own experience. A tactical-action game for the most part, with TONS of technology to exploit, all which people mostly play for the overarching story.
Seriously, the OG MGS trilogy is among the most replayable games of all time, together with classic Doom and Resident Evil titles.
Worst possible opinion
oh it has a pc port? I was thinking about emulating.
yeah as I said, I didnt play it yet so I dont know what to think of it, that's why I would've liked if you guys explained a bit what's good about the gameplay
a lot of games look like shit on a first impression, but turn out to be fucking amazing. You shouldn't judge a game this easily, that's why I prefer to ask and read up a bit more on a game before deciding not to play it
OP, ignore this faggot.
Gameplay is not only responding to challenges and solving problems. Gameplay is also choosing to smoke cigarettes and watching the life slowly deplete. Gameplay is calling the same person over and over and see them getting mad. MGS1 is riddled with this type of things and by watching someone else you would never feel that the game is reacting to YOUR choices, and that is like completely missing the point.
Yeah MGS1 and MGS had pc ports and I got them to work on Windows 10 but it's probably easier to just emulate them. Play the games user, don't listen to those faggots telling you it's outdated, as I said I got into the series a couple of years ago, played them all in release order and had a great time. They're great games and very interactive, you won't get the same experience by watching them on youtube, just staying in a room trying to exhaust codec calls is very enjoyable and you won't see that in any playthrough
With such stupid prejudices and ADHD mentality, you better just skip the whole series. You either PLAY all of the games, or none at all.
I just know you would instantly rage-quit MGS3 as well.
What's the best way to play the games if I am PC-only? Some user said something about a PC port of MGS1, is that good so I dont have to emulate? I want to play with a controller though
Don't be a fag. Play MGS1, and then the rest in order. Do not watch anything on Youtube like the absolute mongoloids who couldn't afford a PS3 for MGS4. You will have an amazing experience playing these superb fucking games.
>I didnt play it yet so I dont know what to think of it
The very first thing you siad to us was that 1 and 2 looked like dogshit. You already made up your mind of coming here instead of playing the game for 5 minutes. MGS 1 is like 6 hours long, just go play it. If you like it you like it, if you don't you don't. Did you really learn anything from this thread you couldn't have by just playing the game?
> I would've liked if you guys explained a bit what's good about the gameplay
It's an arcade-y stealth game, not that complex but no barebones either. The main appeal if messing with the enemies, tight and restricted level design, and weird gimmicks. Anymore explaination will spoil what makes these games fun honestly. So go play it you have you're answer man.
I made my friends play these games in 3, 1, 2 order because that's the order they happened chronologically in the universe. Did I do it right? They absolutely loved it.
MGS1 is dogshit. Plag TTS version.
Its funny, MG1 and MG2 are even older but their gameplay holds up. MGS1 just doesnt.
Oh, in before Gen X faggots whining about “muh matrix”
No, you didn't.
It's release order, or bust.
EVERY Metal Gear assumes you've played the previous game(s), and builds on top of that assumption.
Not to mention playing them in release order lets you witness and appreciate the gameplay and visuals evolving with each title.
>MGS1 is dogshit. Plag TTS version.
Literally go kill yourself.
MGS holds perfectly fine.
I think with the constant retcons, the only real way to play the series is chronological:
3, PW, 5, MG1, MG2, 1, 2, 4
