If Silent Hill 3 came out today...

Heather looks realistic, and her face ironically doesn't go too hard into the uncanny valley despite being a PS2 game. Devs these days do facial capture for both the creation of the model itself and the animation, which is why Abby and Ellie from TLOU2 as an example looks so silly sometimes. Correct me if I'm wrong, but all the face animation for SH3 (and 2) are done by hand.

Oh and to make sure everything "reads" right the facial actors over do everything. So they do cartoon expressions at times. Plus they're going for hyper-realism which always looks a bit off and in a few years will be seen as bland or ugly. And they use models not real normal people. Models look like models not actual normal human beings. So we have these just slightly off almost uncanny valley awkwardly animated ugly people who are bad copies of models.

Also funny that despite literally 16 years, Heather doesn't look that much worse or different than Ellie graphically.

I do think that motion capture can still work well, since the facial animation in the RE Engine titles are pretty solid, but there's still a finesse like quality with animations done by hand that no one can really replicate anymore since it's too time consuming.

At least Harry's death was handled with some nuanced instead of being laughably over the top like in TLOU2

Unlike TLOU2 you're never supposed to root for the monster. Harry's arc reaches a satisfying conclusion in SH3 despite the fact that he gets killed so early, his entire goal in the first game was to find and protect his daughter from the evil of the town. He eventually succeeds for a time, but by the time SH3 has come along he can no longer protect her so now she needs to protect herself and he has raised her to be able to do so. At no point does it purposefully spit in the faces of the fans like TLOU2 does.

I honestly don't really care about Joel dying in TLOU2 by itself, it's the way it's handled is the problem. Joel uncharacteristically gets caught off guard by Abby's posse despite being a seasoned survivalist. Harry was just a normal dude who was chilling at home and had little reason to believe he was still being pursued by the cult after being in Portland for so long. Joel's death is also comically brutal and had it coming after his actions in the first game, while Harry's death is much more of a surprise, especially since newcomers won't know right away that Harry is Heather's father.

SH2-3 animations aren't all by hand. I've seen BTS stuff and they have motion capture just much more crude. They've had motion capture since the PS1 era. So they do crude motion capture + a lot of cleanups.

I don't know where this idea that the SH games were all hand animated which isn't true.
