What's wrong with the current state of Magic design?
Magic the Gathering: Arena - a video game
For standard?
The fact that mana barely matters.
Shitting out stuff like Ugin on turn 4 is fucking garbage.
Oko was kind of a massive brainfart but not that much of an exemplar for the general direction. Even though completely broken planeswalkers are way too common now.
Nothing, it was always crap.
Nothing. EDH is better than ever and Standard has always been shit.
Whoever they hired in 2017 has royally screwed every magic format for the foreseeable future. Ravnica Allegiance, War of the Spark, Modern Horizonz, M20, Throne of Eldraine, Theros Beyond Death, Ikoria, and all their constant commander products are filled with garbage that should never have been printed.
EDH has been on the decline since True-Name Nemesis and has rapidly been getting worse. Soon EDH won't be anything but cards from commander products.
WotC literally admitted to not testing their cards back in Aether Revolt. Everything has been fucked since Origins.
Maybe Sarkhan shouldn't have dicked with the timeline after all.
FIRE, a new design philosophy to print powerful cards to sell more packs. it's a pretty fitting name.
>There is canonically a split timeline where Sarkhan never revived Ugin, khans continued to rule Tarkir, the Gatewatch was never formed, and Bolas won.
Sarkhan did nothing wrong, dragons are cool.
>Bolas won
You mean continue to be completely irrelevant because Jace keeps getting a new card every year.
Oh, and nice digits
It's one thing not to catch an between a new card and an old one in a format like Legacy or Modern, but how the FUCK did they print these two in the same fucking block and not see it from a mile away?
WotC literally does not test standard for some time. The only testing they do is for limited.
>new design philosophy to print powerful cards to sell more packs
>new
Let me guess: you've been playing mtg for a year?
>FIRE
That wasn't about it anyway.
bolas would've killed most of the planeswalkers including jace if ugin didn't trap him in his sex cave
It's one thing not to catch an interaction*
There is a non zero chance that these cards could have been drafted together though.
Imagine pumping out 4 sets a year and thinking there's any possibility for good design.
They don't test anything besides limited and maro is a fucking idiot who regularly pushes his idea keywords as hard as possible.
Are there actually people who care about this marvelshit?
nothing, competitive constructed formats are always going to be cancer
>KHA-KHA-AET
It was possible, unlikely but possible.
I'm lamenting the fact we didn't get the more interesting timeline where the end result was no planeswalkers besides Bolas.
FIRE was about more specials cards, more foils, and more exciting cards. Exciting meaning powerful.
if they test for limited explain ikoria draft
too much product not enough quality control
i have no idea who can keep up with an entire new set every 3 months and the fact every Standard rotation is packed with so much power and different ideas all mashed together, except full time grognard whales.
but hell they have their whales and it keeps making them money so who am i to criticize.
it reminds me of Games Workshop they release a new boxed set every month no casual could ever possibly keep up with the amount of product. its a niche hobby but they just milk whales like crazy. and its really unbelievable they made a new ruleset edition. they don't even bother finishing 8th edition, you have to rely on old metal figs for armies or half your units don't actually exist in store.
ok so fair enough, its been 3 years, they said 9th Ed is not a total overhaul and 8th Ed is mostly still valid, but still, armies like Dark Elder are just fucking missing half their units, new Sisters only just started coming out, and instead they constantly release new boxed products instead of finishing existing armies.
Chris Cocks became CEO and started pushing for more collector items like the Secret Lairs and Collector Boxes, focusing on Digital to cut costs and get some of that sweet Hearthstone money, and pushed cards that made people need the newer sets more. He's Hasbro's sockpuppet and he's making them filthy rich by not giving a fuck and just pumping out product.
Look at when he was hired and why he was hired to do so.
Yes. Market research has shown that Planeswalkers are the most popular type of card in MtG and that s-boys (who make up the majority of MtG's crowd) love Marvel.
Therefore the only logical course of action is replicating the feeling of Marvel movies in MtG and that means we need a group like Jace and Friends going on adventures and meeting other wacky planeswalkers.
TODAY
I WILL REMIND THEM
This. As much as I love Abzan I love Dromoka just as much.
Post the one where his playtesters fucking quit because they realized playing with a card outside of the game fucked with variance and the game itself.
Mtg is an old ass game kept afloat by lack of competition and even that is over now.
He talks about that in some recent article, but not the playtesters quitting lol.
Reminder that WotC was surprised when players thought Dragons of Tarkir was the bad ending
