Now, regardless of the perspective, aiming has become a part of every shooting game and it slows things down considerably.

RE4 is championed as the start of the modern third-person shooter and the one innovation the games that followed take from it is the idea that you have to stop and aim.

I'm gonna assume in good faith that by aiming OP meant a zoomed in ots/ads mode that you enter by pressing L1 as opposed to freeaim in max payne.

Might have been a good idea to clarify aiming as a separate action and not just aiming in general. I definitely wouldn't say it's ruined them but it would be nice to have some more modern fps games where you can shoot without having to slow to a crawl pressing the aim button first.

Because consoles. Ever wondered why Quake never took off on consoles? The hardware is inept in terms of processing fast gameplay, not to mention the fact that using a controller with an FPS is like driving a car while wearing crutches.

You still aim in Max Payne, what you are referring to is Iron-Sights or Zoomed in aiming in which you would be right, that they helped degenerate the genres.

No, it's just an abstraction of the walk/run button which shooters have had since Doom, "aiming" is endemic to FPS games since the earliest days of their inception.

Max Payne only has 1 movement speed, I would argue that you move so slowly in Max Payne that you are effectively forced to aim all the time.

This is not really true since player and enemy health are both very low in games that lean on this feature heavily, it's trivial to clear a large room full of enemies due to the precision and efficacy of weapons afforded to you in military FPS games where the same scenario in Doom or Quake would be a 2-5 minute pitched battle because you can't dish out anywhere near the effective DPS, sure you can maintain your maximum move speed while engaging and said speed is generally much faster than even the sprint in military FPS games but it takes much much longer to clear threats.

Very few games copy RE4's mechanics verbatim, particular when it comes to aiming absolutely rooting you to the ground, most only cut your maximum speed in half and virtually none besides perhaps Gears of War have enemies that are so hardy, and even then Gears is a very movement focused shooter despite it having an aiming and cover system.

Additionally RE4 is an action/horror/luchador wrestling game not a strict shooting game and therefore a poor example for your argument anyway.

I dunno, Destiny has ADS and its enemies are bullet sponges. There's loads of arcadey games with aim down sights now

Except random bullet spread changed it from being a thing new players might do to help aim to something required if you want to hit anything more than two feet away. That's a pretty big difference in function.

Doom also had random, increasing spread.
