First off, I'm a huge fan of the original mirror's edge. I owned the soundtrack, bought all of the DLC time trials maps, loved it. Mirror's Edge Catalyst failed to impress me at first. It has blurry textures, stiff animation, and they went too futuristic with the world design.
I've been revisiting it lately and holy shit, this game actually does some stuff really well compared to the original. Movement is better. Fighting is better, even if the AI sucks. It's an actual open world map with tons of paths and routes, compared to the original's limited corridor runner. The music is decent, though not as good as the first. Overall, it feels like an actual city with a history with all the runner hideouts and different districts all with their own unique feel. This shit got a bad shake. Give it another try.
I would have agreed right up to a few days ago. But I've played both games together right now and the movement really is better in catalyst.

they fuck up the sequel

mirrors edge is the kind of game that really only needs to be side activities
Adrian Reyes
I agree it is very underappreciated. The parkour and the setting is the heart of these games, and I love it.
I wish we could get more, especially the stuff that ME1 did great. I liked having the time trials be segregated activities and the missions being more intricate. I like having guns intermittently, it's fun just to unload into some guy and fuck him up royally in the midst of knocking out the others. Catalyst looks gorgeous, and the different approach the story meant things could slow down and zoom out more. They definitely wanted to get in the characters and world building for an ongoing series of games, but presumably that won't be happening.
Sometimes I'm reminded how underappreciated even the first game is, although videos and discussions about Catalyst are always twice as negative. People can't seem to talk about these games without disclaiming that they only love X, but not parts Y or Z. It's like..if you really loved it, you would feel comfortable saying how much you enjoyed it without having to dump on the game as a whole or the developers.

No.
Juan Jenkins
At best it was painfully medicore
>Movement is better. Nope, they nerfed the momentum/inertia mechanics and made the retarded sidejump bug into an actual feature that you can spam endlessly >Fighting is better Marginally, but there's more and it's forced >It's an actual open world map with tons of paths and routes Lmao no, it's extremely linear with tons of backtracking and confusing detours >Overall, it feels like an actual city It doesn't feel anything like a livable city, it's completely devoid of all human life except for some NPCs that stand around doing nothing until their ready to give quests.
Oh hell yeah. I disliked the "Eurasian" features they pushed in 2. Most people are Asian. I get that the Swedes get off on some white guilt race mixing though.
Elijah Robinson
Yes, that is the one of the big weaknesses of the game. You have to memorize these ridiculously long and elaborate paths. You'd be running for two or three minutes straight, getting everything perfect, then miss a landing and be totally fucked and have to do it over agai, all for a couple of "scrips" that did nothing.
Brayden Reyes
The problem with Catalyst is more the general idea and the problems it caused. "what if mirror's edge was open world" doesn't work, because the entire point of the game is traversal, while in open world games traversal is a chore. The first game game was based on going through a level as fast as you can.
That said, the second game feels really nice. And while I am not sure how much I agree with actually breathing some life into The City, it still feels very good. youtube.com/watch?v=-4j3W8K49O0
If it was another mission-based linear game where Faith does a thing, it would be much better.
Zachary Carter
honestly that screenshot doesn't even do it justice. The sequel is completely missing all the cool physx stuff which was a huge disappointment to me
Jordan Perez
They literally based their whole artstyle on Audi cars and emo techwear youtube.com/watch?v=0N2-6ZTl5bs No wonder why it looked so generic
im amazed they made a token black tech girl character actually cute
Hudson Perez
The city in Catalyst felt too sterile and distant. You spent most of your time looking down on it from a distance, whereas in the first game you were getting down and dirty in the back alleys and dingy apartments. It made you feel like an actual outlaw criminal whereas in the sequel you were an unimportant observer.
Isaac Nguyen
I like Audi cars and emo techwear
Josiah Cook
>If it was another mission-based linear game where Faith does a thing, it would be much better.
I could agree with that. Incorporate some of the movement and combat from the sequel into a game that features a more.. curated.. experience of a linear game with level design and you might be onto something.
Thomas Torres
Even if it was a mediocre game, I'm just glad there was a game despite being a reboot that tried to make the same game
I just don't get several things like the levelling system, dulled colors and shit
still enjoyed it enough for the steam release 10$, probably would've bought it for 30$

Shut the fuck up. I fucking loved Mirror's Edge and Catalyst was genuinely the last video game I was hype for. Catalyst single-handedly opened my eyes to the so called "woke" culture and how it was affecting video games. Catalyst was abhorrent dogshit that had no love whatsoever put into it on top of being a buggy and directionless mess.
Actually the first thing I do with my Series X is replay 1 and 2 of Mirror's Edge.
I want to play these games with adaptive HDR and machine upscaling so fucking bad.
It fucking hurts going back to my PC over my XOX, I really perfer HDR over everything else.
Grayson Lee
The woke stuff isn't noticeable if you're not actively searching for it.
Nolan Cruz
Maybe you should just grow up?
Benjamin Collins
I was utterly invested in Mirror's Edge so of course I'm going to be the same for Catalyst and indulge in every aspect of the game. So yes it was very noticeable.
Bentley Thomas
More like the first is overrated. Yes, the graphics were insanely beautiful even to this day but let's not pretend the story was anything interesting. Catalyst is the sane thing. The skills locked behind the tree are barely a thing since you get majority of it after like 2 missions. The plot is still forgettable and the city is just more futuristic. The movement feels more fluid and time trials are still fun. I literally do not see why it got so much hate (here).
Nicholas Wilson
>(here) nah, so anyway yeah we all agree this game was fucking awful. Mirror's Edge deserved better than SJW bullshit. They even whitewashed the main character lmao, woke libs are so fucking racist
>SJW bushit What sjw bullshit? Iirc I don't remember seeing anything woke at all.
Gavin Flores
Just double down the propaganda for the third one. It will be as bad as the second one but you will get good scores.
Logan Nguyen
The story in 1 was bland as fuck, but it it didn't interrupt the gameplay and was tolerable, and at least Faith was cool The story in Cataylst is like nails on a chalkboard bad, it's like being forced to watch a bad YA movie while babysitting your nephew, and Faith is pure teenage angst
Nathan Martin
>The woke stuff isn't noticeable if you're not actively searching for it. Agreed.
