It's not fair. What we got was pretty good gameplay wise and I did enjoy that they used the typical Mario cast, but non of the special NPCs was such a gut punch. They didn't even bring back any notable locations aside from Bowser's castle and Peach's castle. I'm just glad it wasn't a total waste of potential.

I want to say Other M is an outlier. Sakamoto did a great simplistic job with Samus Returns, and he's the same guy who fought to keep Super Metroid dialogue-less even when higher ups were pressuring him to incorporate dialogue like an RPG. Sakamoto fucked up with Other M, but I hope he learned from that. The man knows how this series works.
