In Jap spinoff material like the manga it's conveyed much better, because Mario and Peach are constantly trying to get the other to chase them. If Mario gets any attention from Daisy then Peach kinda loses it and will go to ridiculous lengths to make sure Mario doesn't get taken away from her. But when he's following her she just wants him to eat out of the palm of her hand.
The games don't convey this side of things at all, so Mario is the only one pining and just looks kind of pathetic. Peach needs to chase him too so it balances out.
