killing npcs that you don't have to is morally wrong. go ahead try to justify it, you may say that its ok because they don't have feelings but you literally don't have to kill them so why do it?

Which is why making "kids" unkillable in games is stupid.

Some people like to test the limits of everything that can be done in a game. Maybe something interesting happens, maybe not.

Because it's fun and they are not real

What about hostile but avoidable NPCs? Do they count?

>that you don't have to
wtf? Why are you drawing such an arbitrary line?

They're AI coded fragments, why should I feel for them?

nigga how do you even know that what if real life was a video game and alians killed us because they didn't know we have feelings?

Because it's fun

>MGS V
>Kids are commiting horrible crimes and murdering everything without remorse
>Accidentally kill some kid with a grenade
>"Wtf Snake you're the lowest shit in the entire universe I fucking hate you"

When you play a game you're somewhat creating a story (it's fun to roleplay, basically) so if you're a villainous character then yes you would do villainous things.
Doesn't significantly change the morals of the person.
That being said, I refused to play Pikmin as a kid because I didn't want any of them to die and it seemed they had to to progress.

>but you literally don't have to kill them so why do it?

Loot, the satisfaction of deleting a character I don’t like from existence within the game world, sometimes you get secret dialogue or something. Oh and if it’s an attractive woman it makes me really fucking hard

what about banjo tooie where you are rewarded for killing innocent NPCs?

They aren't real, and you literally don't have to play a video game in the first place.

I knew that the second I flipped on the console

Should have just not included the kids in the game at all aside from Eli, make it so that the mission is you have to capture him so killing ends the mission that way.

What're you doing throwing grenades around kids though lad? Seems silly tbqh

you are just buncha carbon why should i care about you

Aren't they indoctrinated to do so?

You don't "have" to do anything. You don't even have to make half-assed justifications or live.

By playing the game at all you're bringing these NPCs into "existence". Turning off the game removes them from "existence". You're immoral the moment you change levels or turn off the system.

it's morally wrong that the developers did not implement a punishment system for harming innocents in a game. If I were designing a game. I would put an invisible karmic counter that goes down every time you harm an innocent. what makes this counter unique is that it saves that number even if you reload your save to before you harmed someone. this is designed to punish players for saving and massacring a whole village and reloading the game.

Not my fault, the little fucker got in the way. If Kojima wanted me to feel sorry about killing an "innocent" kid then no, I don't feel bad.

>what makes this counter unique is that it saves that number even if you reload your save to before you harmed someone. this is designed to punish players for saving and massacring a whole village and reloading the game
Undertale actually did something similar to this if you start a new game after a genocide run.

The NPC's can't feel pain, know that they're dying, know that they're alive, nor be loved by others beyond scripted events that boil down to some actor in a room saying lines. You can bring them back with ease. Saying killing an NPC is wrong is like saying deleting a sentence in a word document is wrong. It's just code and assets.

AMAZING, MISSION COMPLETE

Dumb as fuck rationalization. So in every game where you aren't forced to kill enemies to progress you are evil if you do?

Hope you never jumped on ANY goombas in the entire franchise. And you better find other ways to get money in Zelda. And if you dared kill anything in most of Doom.

You're fucking retarded.

Na I didn't feel bad about killing a kid by accident either, but I did enjoy it as a new game mechanic sort of. Don't think the point is "make you feel bad" but "here's an extra challenge, enemies you can't kill"

What about when a hostile but skippable NPC is attacking a non-hostile or friendly NPC?

Morals are in the eye of the beholder, and therefore impossible to speak objectively about unless you work off some sort of widespread standard. Any discussion before that is just excuses one way or the other or outright pointless.

An eye for an eye is just and fair. If they try to kill me, even if I can spare them I'm under no obligation to do so.

I killed Eygon when I first met him because he insulted me in DS3.
I'm playing as a character, not as myself. The character was a violent man.

teaching children that you can get away with murder in video games has probably made society worse

I always try to find a way to kill or screw over NPCs. They are just ones and zeros.

I loved landing a firetruck on a pedestrian in GTA IV.

Teaching children that doing the right thing is only important when a fat man gives you presents for it is even more destructive. Also nobody with a brain takes like lessons from video fucking games, any kid young enough to do that shouldn't be playing them at all.

life lessons*

Killing an npc in a game is no different that shattering a piece of glass or breaking a rock with a sledgehammer. There is nothing immoral about it.

my argument wasn't that i would make them murderers but i would negativly effect their developing mind and reduce their empathy

Absent parents who have allowed their children to fill the void left by their shitty parenting with movies and video games are more the issue than the games themselves.

I could never do the dark brotherhood quests.

user, there are lots of people without a brain and unsupervised/improperly supervised children playing games out there.

keep telling yourself that

That would be the fault of the parents and society as a whole, not videogames.

I am an atheist, there is no such thing as "morality" for me. I don't know good from evil so killing humans or computer characters is the same thing.
