Which indie should be in Smash, bros?

Shantae, Freddy Fazbear, Untitled Goose, Cadence, The (Hollow) Knight, Reimu, Commander Video, Meat Boy, Quote, there's too many indie fighter candidates to count. Who do you think would be the best fit Zig Forums?

Frisk

Gunvolt,Qoute, Reimu, Madotsuki, (Inti is indie right?), Shantae are the ones that need some form of representation either as a fighter or something

Hollow Knight would be timely if Silksong comes out in the next two years. Shantae, Cadence, Commander Video, and Reimu could have interesting movesets, but between those four I think Cadence has the best chance.

Reimu hands down
>Best music
>Best moveset potential and gimmick
>Longest and best significance

>anyone but Undyne
She's a perfect fit and would have a very fun moveset, plus she would be the first spear user. Only downside is people would look st her being a lesbian rather than being a cool fighter. Frisk would be boring, Sans dies in one hit, asriel is dead and assgore is ass.

I could also see cadence getting in because of the semi-official indie zelda game (fucking weird and put of nowhere, still cool though)

THE Steve from Minecraft

Gunvolt would be cool just on the fact that I would be able to scream HOTTOBASHIRE! ARMEDU BRUE! every match.

This. Also made by a single guy after all these years so it's still truly got that indie spirit.

I'm not a smashnigger, but either Reimu or Steve.

Quote is the best candidate out of what people consider the typical circle of indies in the West. Reimu is pretty respectable as well. The Knight is a bit too new, but they could be incredible if implemented right. Commander Video or Meat Boy would be based, but I don't really see them as fighters. They could at least bring the former back as a Spirit since he was a trophy in Wii U. I've always seen Shantae as overrated in terms of Smash, but that's just my opinion.

God please just give me a Hat Kid mii costume, that would be so rad.
I'm not holding my breath though

I'd say Quote deserves it the most, but I'd still personally prefer Jacket or The Kid for the sick remix potential.

If I could have any indie get in, it would've been Cuphead, but with him out of the picture, I'd go for Quote. The Knight would be cool too.

Quote, Reimu, or Steve? 'deserve' it the most. Of course, that does not mean they would be the ones to actually get in.

Shovel Knight is an assist so we aren’t getting any because he would have been the number one choice

>tfw reduced to Indie Status

Quote or Reimu would be the best "indie" representative by a wide margin, depending on whether they want to pander to western or eastern audiences. Quote would give us a Curly Brace echo, and Cave Story is still seen as the "grandfather" and inspired tons of modern indie games. Reimu is Reimu and from a very long-standing series that has inspired a million more solo projects and shmups, and would be an obvious choice in most circumstances. Both have a million options for their movesets and would be very, very easy to create, are fan favourites, and would even fit very well into the Nintendo brand.

The problem with Quote and Reimu is that the companies that Nintendo would have to deal with for licensing are, to put it bluntly, fucking godawful to deal with from a legal point of view. Nicalis is a fucking godawful publisher in general and Nintendo would almost certainly want Pixel's input on Quote, and Pixel wants nothing to do with them ever again. Zun is definitely nicer to deal with, but he'll want Reimu represented in exactly the way he wants, and Sakurai's already said that after Nintendo makes the deal with the 3rd party, he's pretty much free to create the character how he wants to, so Zun would definitely say no to that.

From there, the rest don't have too much historical or cultural significance.
>Freddy
>Goose
>Cadence
>Hollow Knight
>Shovel Knight
>Commander Video
>Meat Boy
>Cup Head
>Frisk/Sans

All of these are interesting choices, but none have really influenced gaming as a whole. A few have large fanbases or have sold massively, but for as well as Undertale sold, it hasn't inspired a new wave of games and developers like Cave Story has, and while Five Nights has inspired many memes, no one would argue it's importance against Touhou Project.

So, with all that said, while Quote and Reimu would fit best and deserve it, the most likely candidate for the "Indie" rep would be Steve or Shantae - neither of which are truly indie.

>Steve or Shantae - neither of which are truly indie.
Can't agree there. Shantae's been around a while but Wayforward is still a studio with a showstring budget that's constantly suckling one teet or another to not go bankrupt, and Minecraft is, at it's heart, one autists's lego set. That's about as indie as it gets if you ask me.

Literally none of those you just said. None of them are important enough to be included lol

Quote is the only option Cave Story is THE indie game and his moveset potiontial is incredible not to mention the possible music/stage
(Hollow) Knight would be cool too but I have my bets on it being a mii sword fighter costume since I don't think it's moveset would be varied enough to warrant a new character and I don't think he's quite reached icon status (don't come at me about how amazing Hollow Knight is I already know it's one of my favorite games but it's very recent)
Commander Video and Meat Boy don't have a viable moveset (I've never played bit trip runner so I could be wrong but I think all they do is jump)
Reimu is too niche Nintendo is a company that wants to make money off these dlc packs it's just not likely going to garner much attention
Cadence and Goose are fun games but not really big enough to be in smash
I guess Fazbear wouldn't be the strangest thing to happen but I also don't think it's very likely or demanded for that matter
And for my final hot take to open a can of worms here Shantae games are just ok. They're fun they're pleasant but they're just ok and Shantaefags please please please I'm begging you before you respond to me in an uproar go masturbate and get that post-nut clarity because aside from being horny for her I don't see her being a popular character

cont'd

Steve started off Indie, and has inspired a million games and become a phenomenon and basically a household name akin to Lego's. Problem is, he sure as fuck isn't indie anymore, which would undoubtedly piss off a lot of people - there's also the problem that licensing rights to Steve in the game would probably cost a fortune, and there's certainly a chance that Nintendo doesn't even recoup development and licensing costs for him.

Shantae's the opposite - she started off obscure as all fuck and while the original game LOOKED good, even when it first came out it really wasn't anything special, and it took until their 3rd game to make something that was actually "good". She also started off as a non-indie, being published and partially funded by Capcom - so while the series is certainly indie now, it would be very disingenuous to have her as the "indie" rep. She's only a contender in this case due to the age of the series - as there aren't too many ~20 year old indie characters still going.

Quote would unironically be the very best indie representative. Cave Story has too much history.

But and this is a big BUT, Hollow Knight might have a sliver of a chance depending on when Silksong comes out.

Minecraft is indie the same way Doom is indie

Said it here but Shantae didn't start off indie, as WayForward did receive some funding from Capcom.
Minecraft was certainly indie originally, but as of right now it's 100% Microsoft, which is approximately the absolute furthest you can get from being an Indie character.

monstro

>he's pretty much free to create the character how he wants to, so Zun would definitely say no to that.
Sakurai's autistic as fuck about third parties
He makes sure he has the owner/creator's blessing on literally everything
He highlighted this regarding Snake's moveset

No, that was strictly because Kojima is a long time friend of Sakurai's. There's an interview where Sakurai's stated that he needs the owner/creator to basically lay off and allow him to do his stuff - I'll see if I can find it.

>Shovel Knight isn’t in the running to most people
Honestly good, his game is ok but every other indie character under the sun would play way more interesting

Cave Story is my favorite indie game that has a decent chance of being in Smash, so I would prefer Quote assuming Nicalis doesn't sap the soul out of him.
>And for my final hot take to open a can of worms here Shantae games are just ok.
This is one of the most widely agreed upon things I see on Zig Forums when people are talking about Shantae, what are you talking about?

If that's the case, that just makes Reimu more plausible. Not only would he honor what ZUN wanted, he'd probably look specifically for him as to how she would be implemented, and since Touhou is still a one man show, there's no complicated licensing issues to work through. Feels like the easiest decision Sakurai could make.

Meant to reply to fucking oops
