Symbolism usually ends up being painfully obvious and contrived. It's already plaguing cinema because it is easier to go for basic symbolism than to actually convey something deep and meaningful. Game critics are already prone to worship every game that takes itself too seriously. Imagine adding heavy-handed symbolism on top of that.
