Early game dark souls is totally hell for noobies. The blacksmith is hidden away and easy to miss in new londo, and it contains weird choices and noob bait items all over:
>drake sword (no scaling, bad range, bad moveset) >knight shield (heavy) >boar helmet (heavy would need havel ring)
People actually went to the new londo smith before andre? Noobs intuitively figure out how to get the drake sword?
Logan Richardson
The first time I ever played this game I dropped it for 8 years because the hollows with shields were kicking my ass
Jonathan Evans
the blacksmith in new londo isn’t the main dude though and Andre is basically impossible to miss. >the drake sword most people would never know it exists without looking at a guide >boat helmet rare drop and armor isn’t that important anyway >knight shield yeah but it’s the first 100% physical you can get isn’t it? honestly the only real ‘noob’ trick is the graveyard which will be a disaster if you try to push into the crypts without knowing what you’re doing
Elijah Cox
>People actually went to the new londo smith before andre?
The game gives you titanite and twinkling titanite shards early game just so you can double back to him. You're supposed to be like +2 by the time you hit Andre.
>Noobs intuitively figure out how to get the drake sword?
They hear dark souls is the hardest game ever so they look up a guide. Guide says a great early game weapon is the drake sword so they get it. Invade early game or watch streamers, and they will be decked out in the most bizzare shit and wielding the drake sword.
It hits hard early game, but holy hell is it awful especially for noobies. It has shit range more akin to a dagger, and no lunging strong attack to act as a "poke". The long sword is a much better weapon for a noobie but normies are distracted by "big number".
Leo Reed
The New Londo blacksmith is the first blacksmith and he is meant to be the equivalent of the blacksmith in the Nexus from Demon Souls. But he's hidden away and some players didn't even know he existed. The game drops you titanite shards early on for a reason. If you're having trouble you're supposed to double back and get up to +5 if needed on your weapons/armor.
The first stretch of the game to andre is pure hell for noobies.
Andre is literally thrown into a stairwell and given a clanking noise so that he is impossible to miss.

>noob bait sounds more like >look I'm a retard thread

Dylan Ortiz
Drake swrod has 200 damage which impresses the naive but it only has short ranged slashing attacks. Most straight swords have a lunging attack like a spear that is extremely useful. Noobies don't know that moveset is more important than numbers.
Benjamin Mitchell
Just cus something happens to you doesn't mean it happens to everyone.
Asher Jones
Absolutely. But he’s not really what we call a blacksmith...
Chase Russell
So your typical normie is going to be some bizzare mish-mash of the drake sword, knight shield, and boar helmet, early by undead chuch.
And the game pretty much hands you chain mail + Undead warrior helmet/shield as starter armor and it's fantastic for that stage of the game but no one seems to use it.
Oliver Allen
Never forget the first time I heard that sound. And I was playing as blind as I could.
Charles Baker
>You're supposed to be like +2 by the time you hit Andre. Why? You literally have no reason to upgrade anything before andre.
Grayson Edwards
In my first and only playthrough I got the dark knight halberd from the first knight you find, just because I learned how to parry, this is the first time I've heard about the drake sword actually.
Xavier Robinson
anyone else think the dlc for 1 was terrible? it was great for 2 and 3 but 1 was such a bore. artoris was coolat the time but terrible bosses, darkroot all over again, and the manus area was so bland.
Logan Lopez
>the new londo blacksmith is the equivalent of the blacksmith in the nexus absolutely not, he’s there for magic infusions Andre is clearly the ‘main’ blacksmith as evidenced by the elevator shortcut from Fire Link that takes you to him even faster than you can get to New Londo. Also if you read a guide I don’t give a shit about your opinion
Austin Kelly
Only 2 has good DLC. Ashes of ariandel and ringed swamp are fucking shit. One is okayish
Zachary Cruz
not many people are going to agree with this opinion, myself included. You already mentioned Artorias, guardian was a good fight, Kalameet is a great fight and so is Manus, the DLC expanded on in-game lore and gave us access to a place that had only been talked about by characters. The caves of humanity or whatever they are called are pretty lame but Oolacile itself is great, though I agree that darkroot 2.0 was nothing to get excited about. You also didn’t mention any of the NPCs you meet in the DLC which include some of the best in the series. In what world is Ashes even half as good as the DS1 DLC? DS1 > Sunken > Elium Loyce > Ringed City > Brume Tower > Ashes ToH is best of the bunch
Landon Ramirez
You're thinking it as veterans who have played the game for 10 years. Come into it as a game designer and as a complete noobie. A lot of people have trouble with undead burg, so the idea is taht people read the descriptions of the titanite shards you get then go to the blacksmith in New Londo and keep doing that until you're strong enough to beat Undead burg/church.
You don't have to do it, but a newbie would.
He upgrades everything to +5 and he is there from the start of the game. His specialty is magic infusions which is niche but you're not even going to be using him for that early game. His role is to be the first starting blacksmith like the one you get in demon souls.
A lot of the "dark souls is the hardest game ever" I think comes from just weird design quirks. Demon's Souls had your starting blacksmith in the nexus so he was impossible to miss then the advanced blacksmith in the mines.
Other quirks are the Rite of Kindling being the best upgrade in the game but being in a place you have no reason to go to. The other quirk is armor upgrades which people ignore or don't bother with when the game is designed around the assumption the player is steadily upgrading them. My 2nd playthrough I upgraded a lot of even light armor and suddenly I could take half the damage from hits and was surviving things I wasn't surviving.
Chase Hernandez
I'm shocked Demon souls never got DLC and Dark Souls only got 1. You'd have thunk they'd invest more in these games? The DLC for Demons's could have been the other Arch stone, and dark could have gotten 3 like 2 did.
Zachary Roberts
+2 means nothing 99% of the time. If it takes 2 hits to kill a guy from a +0 weapon, it certainly won't take 1 hit to kill him with a +2 weapon. While it might help with Taurus demon or black knights, most enemies will die quick enough for upgrades to be meaningless. The amount of time it takes to go down to new londo and then back to undead burg is enough to farm souls to level hp/stamina+load in a way that'll be a lot more important than getting a meager 10 or 12 damage on your weapon.
Levi Martinez
Ok who the fuck cares the game is 10 years old by now, just play the way you want or get fucked and go read a guide
andre is the main blacksmith but not the first accessible one
Nicholas Martinez
>+2 means nothing 99% of the time.
Early game it does.
>The amount of time it takes to go down to new londo and then back to undead burg is enough to farm souls to level hp/stamina+load in a way that'll be a lot more important than getting a meager 10 or 12 damage on your weapon.
You guys are thinking like min-maxers because we have 10 years of people breaking the game apart and playing it the most efficient way.
John Gonzalez
awesome

The fact that these games are really easy once you've gotten used to the Souls formula prove how much of a genius Miyazaki is. His games are new and unique experiences that require the player to learn new things and adapt but after that it's like riding a bicycle: it's not something you forget. And unlike shit like God Hand, yes it's kino but that's not the point, it draws you in from the very beginning without some hipster telling you it "gets better".
Nathaniel Russell
>How dare people discuss games on Zig Forums. kys
Ryder Davis
>noob bait >noobs look up guides >this makes it harder huh
Jack Sullivan
Prove me it means shit. If base weapon damage is 70, +2 will make it around 80 max. If an enemy has 200 hp, 70 and 80 will mean the exact same amount of hits to kill them. This is true for most of the time, until you get to a confortable +7~10, it doesn't mean SHIT. It's math man, I didn't make the rules.
Daniel Barnes
Andre is the equivalent of the 2nd blacksmith you get in demon souls. A lot of the quirky designs in dark aren't found in demon's which is why I think people didn't find it as hard.
