As we leave the single worst console generation behind us, what are your thoughts on what has transpired? Where did all go so wrong? It's not like anything monunetal took place, like moving from 2D to 3D, there were just no goddamn games to be had and those there were sucked ass or were blatant rehashes.
As we leave the single worst console generation behind us, what are your thoughts on what has transpired...
7th gen killed video games, 8th gen is a direct result of that.
Gaming went from a monocultural niche to a mainstream media, leaving behind most of the content that appealed to that original niche. Games sell more than ever now, systems are as successful as they've ever been but people who stuck with it from the 90s have been left behind and feel burned for it.
The seventh generation was worse.
7th had so many 10/10 games I can't accept that. 8th has 0.
Besides garbage motion controls, what would you say 7th gen was bad? I thought it was pretty good.
Name 20
Why now, though? Why not two gens ago?
Name 8 games.
It was then when gaming exploded and truly became mainstream. More quantity always leads to less quality. Most games during the era were soulless cash grabs that tried to copy Halo, CoD and GoW. Classic PC franchises suffered the most from that. Brown and bloom aesthetics were (and still are) repulsive. Developers tried wrestling control from the player as much as possible, thus making games ridiculously easy. Mid-budget development had barely survived, and that was mostly thanks to PC/Steam and the rise of digital distribution. Niche franchises tried (and failed) to capture the normie audience, leaving original fans perpatually angry, prior to that. Yearly rehashes ran rampant. If I were to sum that generation up in several pharses, they would be "streamlining", "cinematic", "multiplatform" and "appealing to the wider audience".
I could, but what's the point?
>I could but I don't want to
Not only that, it stayed for much longer than it should have. Games had tiny levels, tiny NPC count, tiny FOV to compensate for that yet they still ran at silky smooth cinematic 15 FPS at 720p during heavier moments.
>3rd gen saved the video game industry
>4th gen brought the arcade to the home
>5th gen gave us 3D
>6th gen perfected the controller
>7th gen perfected online play
>8th gen
???
Switch is 9th gen.
9th gen looking to be really good with Switch, Sex, PC growing stronger and snoy shitting their diapers.
Generations for me
6gen > 7gen > 4gen > 5gen > 8gen
Started gaming with SNES, 32 years old.
You are retarded. Videogames were mainstream since the fucking NES you baby.
8th gen killed the handheld, and decimated physical media. Wow what a great generation. At least the games look nicer.
>7th gen perfected online play
>Removal of dedicated servers
>Removal of server browsers
>Tiny-ass player count
>Skinnerboxing replacing fun gameplay
The correct phrasing here is "brought online play to the masses".
Bloodborne
>actually thinking any generation that isn't 7 is the worst
No other generation had the red ring and yellow death lights and other sorts of hardware failure rates the way Gen 7 did
It was also the awful awkward early stages of HD development and too many devs chasing trends
Fuck Gen 7, this gen has been great. Hope 9 is more just getting used to hardware and focusing on software VS pushing BIG new GRAFIX
>spergs still coping about switch 3 years later
oh no no no no
>ITT, buncha nostalgia hipsters bitching about gaming going mainstream
Gaming's been mainstream since at least PS2. They figured out how to print money with it during 7th gen and perfected it in 8th, making both these gens shit.
They did give us souls games though so that's some minor thing I guess.
7th gen is tied with 6 for the best unironically. It might overtake it. I'm still finding amazing games. Playing Shikigami 3 on the Wii and and Pupeteer on PS3 now.
This, 7 is the only really bad Gen in my mind for consoles. You had some decent games come out in retrospect and handhelds were pretty kino with PSP and DS but Gen 6 and 8 surrounding it were just way better
Nintendo 64 was such a great console. Every game made for that thing was gold.
I feel like the death of the handheld is understated. The majority of great games these last few gens were on the PSP and 3DS.
You guys are just jaded because of Gaming becoming worse than Hollywood in terms of corporate bullshit.
It's been a great gen for me.
VR is now a thing, and it's finally getting good.
Bannerlord and Warhammer eat up most of my flatscreen PC time.
PS4 had Bloodborne and Persona5R as must haves with a bunch of other meh-kinda good exclusives. Wish they'd focus more on fun though.
Switch found a long-staying niche for Nintendo as a Hybrid and contrary to shitposter's beliefs has good games.
Xbox kinda flopped.
It sounds like you guys just don't enjoy vidya anymore or you're just only capable of focusing on the influx of bullshit
Oh don't get me wrong, games will never be worse than movies. But I quit passivity ages ago.
N64 fan here.
HDMI nodded console.
Everdrive with all the features.
50 physical games.
Shut the fuck up it's like 70% trash.
The Vita flopping is one of the saddest things. It was pretty much a portable ps3. It had so much potential but westerners did not care for it in the slightest.
Sony was choking it in the womb. It didn't even hit the crib.
How is 7th gen bad? I keep hearing this but there are so many fucking good games?
the 7th gen was great, it didn't have any of the lean years that the first half of this generation had.
