Get Super Mario 64 for Christmas 1997 when I was 10 years old
It was innovative for the time but it hasn't aged amazingly well.
Odyssey and Galaxy 1+2 are definitely better.
I had a PS1 and Windows 98 so Mario64 always looked like shit to me
Did you play the original copy you got as a kid? This is crucial.
Well yeah. It was amazing for the time.
A full 3D environment with so many secret areas to discover.
But all that stuff's been improved on and your standards have been raised. If you want to go back and appreciate this stuff, you need to look at it with a nostalgic eye
well no wonder why, going off that screenshot, you didn't play the real game. that's a rom hack!
Your kid self has way better taste than you. This game aged like fine wine
Good for you I guess
I enjoy the game more now than I did as a kid.
First time I played it I was in a hospital on loads of painkillers. Loved every second of it.
It was still good when I played it later, but didn't recapture the same feeling. Oh well
Did you not read the OP?
Galaxy sucks ass and is the definition of souless and gimmicky
cool story bro
why are you playing star road, OP?
Yeah. You can play the same game again on a different copy or an emulator, you idiot.
But for Mario 64, it matters.
>played it again this past week for the first time in almost 23 years
>>didn't find it nearly as impressive
Yeah, no shit retard.
He never says if he played the same cartridge.
Cause we can't go back no matter how much we want too
Ocarina of time was leagues better
Why were you in the hospital? And when was this?
Wet-dry world makes me uncomfortable
Uh, guys
Irrelevant.
Nope, Great gameplay, innovative mechanics, great soundtrack and atmosphere, great story, it's the definition of soul.
Same but I was 11.
The N64 in general blew me away.
>he doesn't know
Best keep it that way
Controversial opinion: Galaxy 1 sucked, Galaxy 2 was good.
Would've been sometime around 2002. I was a kid. One of my lungs up and exploded when I had a bad cough. Birth defect apparently.
Actually healed itself pretty fast and I got to go home on Christmas Eve, which was sweet. Thanks Jesus!
In any case, yeah. IDK what they had me on but I was having the time of my life. Couldn't figure out a bunch of it though, probably because I was a high child.
It's not "impressive" but it's still one of the most solid 3D platformers for its simplicity and Mario is still fun to control. They didn't change how Mario controls in a 3D space until 3D Land/3D World which still uses 64's movement as an absolute base template, and Odyssey immediately reverted 3DL/W's changes since it went back to being a collectathon. It's probably one of the few video-game franchises where you can go back to the first one and it's still good on its own merits compared to the later ones.
I agree regarding 100% completion
Is it really controversial if everyone on Zig Forums can't shut up about how much better Galaxy 2 was than 1?
>try to play star road on switch
>just keeps crashing
Goddammit.
Galaxies I found to be great on their first playthrough. Subsequent playthroughs are boring though. The spectacles were impressive first time around. Second time it's nothing special.
The controls fucking sucked. I didn't finish it 100% until many years later on an emulator using a better controller.
What do you mean user? Thats how the game looked like when I bought it.
