Let's use this shit thread to speculate on how to make Shadow less of a terrible character. Here's some basic suggestions:
1. Shadow's biological age should be younger than Sonic, rather than older. His dumb edgy wangstiness would be much more tolerable if it were an in-universe attempt by an actual child to be "cool"
2. Change him from his current role as a vague peace-keeping anti-hero to be more similar to sonic. While sonic is a thrill junky, Shadow travels around looking to mess with people and get into fights.
3. Get rid of his dumbass rocket shoes.

The rings serve the same purpose as a carburetor restrictor plates would or a revlimiter would.
It's to prevent the amount of chaos energy he can output, to keep it within levels his body can tolerate for sustained periods of time. To run at full power is actually quite dangerous. It's like if your lungs had war emergency power on top of everything else.
