Why cant consoles hit these sales figures anymore?
Why cant consoles hit these sales figures anymore?
The DVDPlayer2 was nothing more than movie watching device. No one used it to play games. Snoyggers BTFO.
I think the people just started buying PC/smartphones for their kids instead, and just let them play fortnite or whatever.
They're objectively worse products now relative to the time of release. Also the PS2 library is so fucking huge it dwards the PS3 and PS4 combined. It's in the holy trinity of best libraries along with the SNES and DS.
this
kids these days dont have consoles
Because the dedicated gaming market is actually shrinking, while gaming on smartphones is constantly growing.
Gamecube was shit and so was the Xbox.
They did generate quality future IPs for the Wii and Xbox 360.
The PS3 could compete with the Xbox 360 Halo thirst but it's that it had to do so that's important.
More to do now, expensive at launch.
Consoles used to be specialized hardware, now they're just PCs that arbitrarily don't let you do stuff.
people have phones and streaming so they don't need cheap DVD players anymore
they fucking killed their own market by charging 700 dollars per console.
The PS2 was the cheapest DVD player you could get at the time, and most people bought it for that reason.
We've forgotten that below all the specs that no one except smelly nerds care about, the reason old consoles used to get the normies happy was that it was an entertainment center, not just a games console. Who cares about a game center if you have to spend as much as a used car on it? People buy consoles because they aren't rich enough to get a full entertainment center.
I think the idea that consoles compete with the PC and not the smart TV is a mistake and console companies will pay dearly for it in a generation or two.
That gen was for a couple of years on par or superior than your average gaming PC.
This. It's cheaper in the long run and it can do way more than just play vidya.
Because DVD players are cheaper now.
This.
But I think it's more than that. By trying to do the jobs of the PC, the smartphone, the smart TV, and the media player; it's become this jack of all trades device that can't do any of them particularly well.
But most people buy these things separate because they want something that can do all of them well, even if they need specialized hardware for it. It used to be that you could get a PS3 or a 360 for the same price that you could buy a DVR, a smartphone, and a smart TV. That's not the case anymore. 700 dollars can get a really good smart TV that can do everything a console can do way better except play games.
Games aren't that important to most people, they can live without them if they get a superior entertainment experience. When most people think 'games', they think of their phones, anyway.
taxes on lesser countries, brs are probably still buying ps2s
taxes IN lesser countries you mean. They do it to themselves
yeah true. might as well let their corrupt government keep skimming a little off the top to keep some of the riff raff out of my console experience
internet streaming took off so less people are buying the cheap blu-ray player known as a playstation.
ha ha remember when microsoft tried to do HD-DVD instead? and in the end neither format lasted as long as VHS or DVDs.
Truth
Blu-rays are still around, it's just that now you have Ultra HD Blu-rays which ironically not that many TVs output that anyway. Also no one really uses them to their fullest data extent like MGS4 did by using every single layer that was available to use in the disc. I'm not sure if any other game even boasted about the damn size that can be on the disc except MGS4.
Haven't you noticed that all of Sony's biggest titles are literally aimed at fucking boomers?
Kids and teens don't play games on consoles anymore.
Brand new PS2 was really cheap after the price cut, even cheaper after PS3 release.
How much of that was fueled by GTA3?
I heard the PS4 and Xbone were underpowered when they released. Not sure how true that is since I don't game on PC. Do next-gen consoles fair better than last-gen in terms of power for the time?
Because the PS2 was released in a perfect storm when all of its competition was still going full retard right after the immense success of the PS1. It had an amazing year in 2001 which alone cemented its spot in 1st place with GTAIII alone.
Nintendo shat the bed AGAIN with mini-DVDs, let Microsoft buy up Rare even though Rare gave them the best years of their life, and had to regain the trust of 3rd parties after the relative failure that was the N64. It was also a time when normalfags were going into the "mature games for mature gamers such as myself" phase.
SEGA's retarded decisions over a decade had finally caught up to them.
And XBOX was the new kid on the block that failed everywhere that wasn't the U.S. and partially Yurop because it was a gaijin console that had fuck all besides Halo, JSRF, and Panzer Dragoon.
You mean DVD players right? That's a DVD player.
It's hard to believe they still make dvds and always bundle blurays with a dvd version. Why can't it just be all bluray at this point? Between the PS3, PS4, and Xbox One, that's 250 million+ devices that can play bluray discs and that's without even counting actual bluray players.
Gamecube was aight. Agree on Xbox though.
Market saturation. A lot of casuals stopped after PS2 because they just got it as a sort of accessory to their home. To them, it's enough to say "yeah, I play video games. I have a PS2 and uh..... NES." My aunt and uncle haven't bought anything after Wii. Many of them aren't obsessed like avid consumers, and aren't willing to shell out 4 or $500 every 6 years, and will opt to stay out of the rat race and just keep their one game console as that toy they bring out on Christmas for the kids to play with.
no one plays DVDs anymore due to streaming and we have SmartTVs so you don't need to buy a console for Neflix or Hulu
>DVDs, let Microsoft buy up Rare even though Rare gave them the best years of their life
Dudewut. Rare's best years were behind them by that point. Nintendo let Microsoft by them to get rid of Rare.
