I had assumed it was the real Jack's psyche keeping him alive, his need to see that there was a a sliver of hope for his family. Maybe he could've actually fallen down and died each time he got burnt or shot up but he kept making himself get back up because deep down he couldn't handle dying without seeing his family redeemed
