Just finished this and the 2 DLCs. I gotta say I'm baffled at how this game gets so much hate on this board. I'd hesitate to call it a masterpiece because it has a handful of issues I'll get into in a sec but this game has a powerful emotionally moving story, some of the most fleshed out characters/world I've seen in gaming, and it's a pretty huge overall upgrade in gameplay from Last Light. Fucking great game. Still, it's not without its issues:
Metro Thread
1. Performance. I realize this could be an issue with my machine but I dont think that's the case. My PC meets the recommended requirements, my drivers are all updated, and I'm even running optimal in game settings. Despite getting 60 fps 90% of the time, it does randomly stutter at times. It's not so often that it ruins the game but it is rather annoying when it does happen. Part of me thinks this is an issue because the devs likely haven't worked on many open world games before.
2. Fewer Bosses/Minigames compared to Last Light. What happened? There are like 2 bosses in the main game while there were like 4 in last light. I guess if you count the 2 bosses in the Sam's story DLC then it adds up to the same amount but that's extra content. Kinda lame you have to shell out more cash to get the same amount of bosses. Also what happened to the side activities like the strip club and rat shooting gallery that were introduced in last light? I was hoping we'd get more stuff like that but it seems they removed minigames entirely which sucks
3. Relatively empty world. The overworld isn't 100% barren but if you're going to go open world, you gotta populate the world with interesting side content. Too many times in this game i would follow a hidden path only to find 1 weapon mod or just some extra bullets. That's lame as fuck, man. Give me optional bossfights, give me secret weapons, give me something. Anything better than a few more bullets.
I've got a few more nitpicks like not being able to take the gas masks off bodies anymore, seemingly nonsensical changes to interaction prompts, and a lack of solid navigational tools but those are less important compared to the big 3 issues i just listed.
Despite these issues, the sheer amount of QOL changes, the more fleshed out characters, and the useful changes to gameplay easily make this the best Metro game yet
Both DLCs shit hard on the basegame.
The story is absolute garbage and the only reason dumb shit happens in this game because
a.) ana is a dumb cunt who cant follow orders
b.) anas dad is a dumb retard following orders
I think they made it really clear as to why he acted the way he did. Miller lost his wife and had since become really protective of Anna. To the point he'd become obsessed with doing whatever he needed to do to make sure she and everyone else were safe even if it meant restricting their freedom. So when somebody tells him the government still exists and wants to meet with him, he jumps at the chance. Also this very clearly explains how Anna acts. An overbearing parent will naturally lead to a rebellious child which is why she constantly goes off on her own
I still to this day don't like Ana, 2033 was great without her and her relationship with Artyom on LL didn't make the game any better, they just added some dumb romance shit.
also forgot to mention, the 2 colonels DLC might as well be a movie, a good one, but a movie nonetheless. Sam's story introduces some interesting mechanics but they really don't affect the core gameplay loop much and the story isn't as powerful as the main game so I'd have to disagree that the DLC is better than the main game
I was actually thinking about this argument as I was playing and I don't get it. I mean where else would the story logically go? The threat of the dark ones is gone. they left. and with the destruction of the metro averted and everything returning to relative peace its only natural artyom would start thinking of finding a better life and start focusing on Anna
I played it at release on ranger hardcore or whatever it's called. It was ridiculous. No UI elements on screen meant that you'd have to guess how/what stuff in the world you could interact with. The AI was incredibly janky, sometimes shooting you through smoke and fire where you couldn't see them. Stealth was a complete mess thanks to that, and you could never reliably tell when an enemy would spot you. I still don't know if there was a save system outside of autosave. Maybe it was removed in ranger hardcore or it was bugged during my entire playthrough. The open world aspect was pointless. The areas were too small for it to actually matter, but pacing became really weird. Should've left it completely linear.
I picked it up again when the DLCs were released and I liked the first one. Playing the second one, I got a crash right at what I thought was the end, and when I booted it back up it had lost hours of progress.
The atmosphere, graphics, guns and everything else was fantastic though. The overall experience could have been amazing but there were too many issues, and I would never recommened ranger hardcore.
I discussed Exodus on end and Im tired on doing it, so Im not going to explain how retarded the whole plot of "only moscow got nuked guys" is a bad start to a story, but also acting like the radio talk between miller and the cannibal bunker was anything but suspicious from the go and NO character even bat an eye while it was damn fucking clear for the player that those werent gov officials is another big annoynce to this whole fiasco.
Sams story was good because it wasnt this horrible "fight as a team, save X, but actually its only you" nonsense, it was believable and actual well done compared to the clusterfuck that was Exodus, with the exception of those forced bat fights.
I agree on 2 Colonels, but it was still, better than most of Exodus simply because it was set in the metro.
Ranger Hardcore felt better on the first Metro, they butched in LL and Exodus stealth system is garbage so there is no reason to even try Ranger Hardcore except of you are a masochist.
Yeah I'm fairly certain ranger hardcore was meant for those that already beat the game. I'm suprised it even let you select it if it was your first playthrough. it does warn you though. I agree about the AI though. I swear sometimes i could be right in front of one and it wouldn't know and other times I'd move an inch and they'd spot me. the visibility meter helps but you often cant even tell who's the one seeing you. they should add an arrow or something. I think open world could easily work if they just populate the overworld with more interesting shit
>Yeah I'm fairly certain ranger hardcore was meant for those that already beat the game.
Sure, but since I played the first two games on it I assumed it would be similar here. And on paper it sounds perfect, too.
>I think open world could easily work if they just populate the overworld with more interesting shit
I think so too, but they'd never have the resources to pull it off. Better to stick with the linear stuff.
>only moscow got nuked guys
what? it's pretty clear other places were nuked
>fight as a team, save X, but actually its only you
that does happen fairly often but they do also aid you a decent amount too. Damir is by your side for several mission in the desert and Duke and Alyosha help you in other places
literally does not matter at all how good the game is because the publisher pulled it from Steam before release and gave Epic a 1 year exclusivity deal at the last moment which pissed everyone off enough to not give a shit about the game
They should definitely lock that difficulty then next game. either that or add more subtle cues for first time players. I dunno. if they had enough resources to even make exodus, I think they can go a little bigger. It must have sold fairly well
>what? it's pretty clear other places were nuked
Let me rephrase this: both Metro and LL gave the player the impression the world was nuked beyond help, so you start Exodus with expectation of something new or how could they improve the whole Metro thing, and then they just go with "yeah, sorry, was just a jammer blocking radio silence and all, a lot of places are actually fine, whatever".
Especially with Artyom roaming around the whole time, they try to tell you he never saw someone else? And then suddenly a train? And then comes a car with two old people held hostage?
It wasnt a believable story from the start.
yeah I noticed that. I'm pretty convinced that's where most of the hate for this game comes from. Exclusivity is dumb but that deal is likely were a decent amount of their budget came from
what i didn't like about metro exodus is how every character is practically sucking your dick. you're practically an incarnation of Moses at this point in the story, where as the first game you were just a no name trapped away in a shitty underground metro station trying not to get ripped apart.
>both Metro and LL gave the player the impression the world was nuked beyond help
I think that's kind of the point. the only reason the revelation had any impact is because you believed the world was totally fucked. It's pretty clear the factions in the metro would lie to the people constantly. look at the reds, unleashing a disease and then slaughtering people and claiming they were helping them. as for artyom never seeing a train before, Anna did say the area they were in was restricted even to rangers. Maybe artyom never thought the go their because of that until anna convinced him. no secret shes fairly rebellious
Well, that's because after the first game events you're actually the local Moses
well after saving what is essentially the world to everyone in the metro TWICE, I think people might start treating you differently. Especially when rumors about your dark one powers start spreading.
The last Metro was massive dissapointment, i got baited by the amazing first snow level, all the exploration, secrets, it felt like a stalker, but the rest of the game was so trash, my most regretted game purchase
you gonna explain why you think it was trash? also
>secrets
elaborate
>ywn travel on a train through post-apocalypse Russia with your bros
it was so comfy. that guy on Zig Forums who's obsessed with trains was right.
As mentioned, the game felt like Stalker, exploring the map was actually fun, game was inspired, dare i say it, had a "soul". And your actions actually affected the outcome of that chapter. Secrets as in the two fisher dudes, father and son, or that you can actually kill the mighty fish god.
Then came a big fuckin wtf in form of the cannibal bunker, felt so fuckin out of place, a blind fucker would see it coming, but aight, then came desert section, which even though it was even more open, felt much more restricted and narrow. Suddenly, its scripted sequence after another, at which point i dropped it. Got to like half of it, a bit after the underground archives, and just lost all the drive.
I guess the first level baited me it's like another Stalker game i so much want, but the next level reminded me im playing a linear corridor shooter pretending to be openworld
>you can actually kill the mighty fish god
wow really? I didn't even know that. but why are you acting like that's the only outcome you can affect in the game. Depending on what you do, certain people will die, leave the party, or be injured not to mention it all culminates in the ending changing depending on how you played.
Mby, as i said, i didnt finish the game, got to "half" of the desert level and it was literally nothing but railroad after railroad... the other points still stand tho
railroad after railroad? I don't even remember that many railroads on the desert level. most traversal was through the van they give you and ziplines. secrets in general could use work in this game but really the first chapter wasn't that much higher in quality, I think you're really exaggerating the difference
i dont mean railroad in the literal train kind of way
well most bases can be taken down without killing or with killing which affects outcomes. so do sidequests. really I feel like you just didn't explore as much after the first level
i dunno dude, i just really didnt enjoy the second act at all
