I'm at the last third of the game and while I want to get through the game, I also am dreading finishing it, because it's been really good. I can't believe this is a western game, especially in this kind of climate. I hope the New Game+ mode will come soon.

Yeah, 8.5/10 for me.

Because it’s historical fiction, it uses the backdrop of the Mongol invasion to tell it’s own story.

Most of them provide some minor cosmetic stuff and some additional XP, but you can complete them at most points throughout the story so yeah. I think only the Mythic Tales are the big ones to get since those actually give you some new armor or skills.
A good chunk of extra progression is locked behind open world stuff/side quests like getting new combat stances and armor, health, and some resolve (basically healing during combat and pulling off cool moves). You can probably rush through the game but some missions have you traveling almost all the way across a section of an island so it's probably not the best if your dad's not big on open world.

Tsushima didn't really fall to the Mongols. They killed the defending Samurai, went around the island killing villages and shit, and then left.

The last stand at Tsushima was pretty badass in real life. 80 Samurai defended Komada beach against about 8-9000 mongols for like 16 hours until dark before finally being overwhelmed. One of the samurai reportedly killed like 25+ mongols single-handedly. They were finally beaten because they did a final, Last Samurai style cavalry charge and got cut down.
