What they did to Cortana is symbolic to a woman growing up and eventually hitting the wall (rampancy).

Halo 1 shes young, fresh, perky, spunky, and intelligent. Bit of a greenhorn in life, but reliable most of the way. She has the normal trip ups many young women meet with various guys and her high school sweetheart.

Halo 2 is her prime as a female. Shes late teens early 20s, calms down a bit, but still has that fresh side of her. Her looks have hit the peak and shes highly desirable by most men. The twinkle in her eye and hopes and dreams have not diminished. Her skin is youthful, her hair not ruined from years of abuse, and her hobbies plentiful.

Halo 3 is when she begins to go downhill. This is mid 20s, for some, late 20s. While there are no glaring issues, she begins to panic thinking there is something better than the same man shes been with for years. Shes beginning to lose that youthful shine, and sagging in areas she wasn't before. Her perkiness and can do attitude has switched to a more realistic view on life as she delves into a career.

Halo 4-5 is right as the wall hits or about to hit. This is late 20s, or right before the big "three oh" 30. She has noticeable sagging and her body has begun to balloon due to never caring about proper nutrition and aging metabolism. She only started taking care of her skin when it went downhill, and by then, it is too late. To try and regain some of her youth, she goes out to a party, drinks, and has a one night stand. Ashamed the next day she tries to explain it was rape to her highschool sweetheart, who then does everything possible to rekindle the love they had.

At that point, however, it is too late. The relationship will never be the same. Her joyful and perky attitude never to return, and a series of one nighters and ice cream to stay happy. If she doesn't end up single with a child, it'd be an achievement.
