When I was a kid I would always give every character a different name. Sometimes just random shit sometimes people I knew (but never myself for some reason). I remember in FF6 naming Gau random letters like hg78thg. What made it more confusing is when replaying games I would change all the names so from playthrough to playthrough everyone would be called something different. This made it confusing as hell to remember who was who in circumstances when you only had the name to go by.
