Bad game held up by a cast of great supporting character. Byleth is a horrendous character though and IS shows they don't know how to write a lead to save their life by getting rid of Sothis 1/3rd through the game for literally no good reason.

pretty cool game held back by a lot of things but still an alright deal. better than fates.

The story was written by Koei Tecmo.

Byleth is the best MC in the series and one of the best characters in his/her game.

Their psychopath background established by Jeralt and because of their birth, goes miles in justifying their lack of knowledge on the world (they simply didn't care) while suits their position as a player character who will also lack information during their first playthrough. For when the player does know, either by their previous playthrough or by looking into the lore, the player is given dialog choices to account for that. In some cases, they can even get support point with characters as a small reward for understanding the lore.

But I think the most genius aspect their design is how it is shown that he/her can make people like them. Byleth/Player can study the background of people in the world and deduce the choices that would they like. He can adapt his personality and choices to the other person in order to get on their good side, which is represented by getting support points. For example, they can pick contrasting options when speaking to npcs in the monastery explore segments. This would normally seem contrived and "gamey" but in Byleth's case it matches perfectly with their psycho/sociopath personality and being the player's pawn, the player may want to choose things that will do just that for the gameplay reward. This is further built upon by the counselor and tea time activities.

Meanwhile they are given opportunities to react to the events in the game and express themselves, which because of their usual lack of emotion, make the impact more noticeable. In plenty of situations, their reaction matches pretty well with what every player would have, such as Bernadetta's love for pitcher plants, or the Death Knight's joining the battle of Gareg Mach and picking a side during chapter 11. At other times the player can choose bizarre dialog choices where the player might want to "just see their reaction" for their amusement such as "Manuella's mask" or "Is it Jeritza" in chapter 6.

Byleth also has a great arc during Crimson Flower where they actually change to become human, signified by how it is Edelgard holding them in the final cutscene rather than Byleth saving Rhea/Dimitri/Claude in all other routes. It shows them as vulnerable and needing of Edelgard's support instead of being a savior with no weaknesses who goes on to become an infallible god emperor in the other routes. This completes their arc that began in the prologue where they rush to save Edelgard much to Jeralt's surprise (because of his background). It fulfills his wish for Byleth to find friends and love which he expresses by worrying for them throughout White Clouds and giving them his ring.

Overall solid for one off. There's some stuff that could stay and other stuff that should go. The class system only fits the academy setting, for instance.

fire emblem is irrevocably damaged

Imagine going to such lengths to defend a complete non character who actively makes the game worse.
>h-he's not poorly written or boring, he's a psychopath!
Fucking honestly. I bet you think Chrom is well written too.

Horrendous visuals, shit replayability despite shiling replayability a lot. Monestary felt like a chinese rip-off Persona, felt like an absolute grind. Too many characters for its own good, some support conversations were way too fucking boring because many characters are incredibly one dimensional.

>he's a psychopath!
exactly

Tons of issues due to rushed development and flawed dev team, but still an overall step in the right direction thanks to a renewed focus on worldbuilding, political intrigue, multi-faceted characters, and solid gameplay.

The monastery was a terrible idea.

I can assure you all of those blocks of text are more thought than anyone at IS or KT put into the silent self insert

One of the reasons why replaying the game is so fucking tiresome and not worth it. Not only are like 75% of the game recycled for all routes, you also have to go through the absolute grind that is the monastery AGAIN.

Good game, the story and characters were a step up from the 3DS titles, which had some huge issues in those areas
The combat and job system is fun too

pretty shit. bad writing, mediocre story, extremely mediocre characters, (i'd argue fucking fates characters have more to them than 3H fags do) and the monestary was a fucking mistake.

>i'd argue fucking fates characters have more to them than 3H fags do
Let's not go that far. I'll admit some are pretty bad but a good 90% of Fates characters were actual one note set pieces that repeated their gimmick down your throat at every opportunity and that's only a few characters from 3H by comparison.

>i'd argue fucking fates characters have more to them than 3H fags do
And you'd be wrong.

I don't know anons, potato samurai, stoic ninjas A and B, and trash werewolf were pretty fucking iconic.

3H characters felt the exact same way if you ask me desu. either painfully boring/uninteresting or downright bad with some sort of stupid gimmick attached to them. at least fates had characters i enjoyed in some capacity, 3H has a handful, if that.

>looks like shit and has ant-sized text for some reason
>reuses a lot of content
>story is nowhere near as good as people think but because it's better than fates' it may as well be the best thing ever
>gameplay is lacking
>the monastery is a chore to get through
>dlc is garbage
I don't know what else is there to say, if you're not a storyfag 3h might be a hard sell.

dimitri good
edelnerd bad

>fire emblem series
>having any worthy stories to talk about
The series has meh writing and the games aren't challenging at all. This series suck, wish they tried and make another advance wars game instead

The monastery is the one reason I haven't even finished the game. I'm at the second to last chapter before ending the pre-timeskip section, started with Black Eagles, and I just can't be arsed to continue. The mystery/story isn't compelling enough for me to continue, I don't really care for the characters, and worst of all the monastery is an absolute grind that feels shallow as fuck and nowhere near as fulfilling as Persona's social systems. It just goes down to run around, talk to everyone, find all the lost items, deliver them, plant seeds and harvest, fish, do the arena for easy teacher points, then do activities to get your students' optimism maximized so they will get as much skillpoints as possible on classroom days. It's such a tedious bore that already adds on to the neutral feelings I have about the story and characters. If I go back, it's just to finish the Black Eagles campaign then watch the others on youtube if my feelings change on the writing and characters.

the only thing this series has going for it are the waifus and husbandos and depending on the game, ost

I want to press Edelgard's face into her meal

Talk to Edelgard on chapter 11. You get the shortest and bestroute

>The series has meh writing
I agree, but then how are people still talking about this game's story while ignoring everything else

So basically, shitty alien invaders destroyed the proto-humans(but not really) and themselves, and then the last alien pulls some "The First Law" bullshit to keep control over the human(but not really) race traitors? And this is fine apparently.

Is that right? I am sorry, I skimmed a wiki.

Terrible gameplay, above average story for 2/4 routes, mediocre music that's repetitive as fuck, and shit graphics even for the switch.

4/10, I hope the next FE brings back good gameplay.
