the only engagements in the main game worth doing are the devilfire grove drake, the quarry ogres, gryphon and grigori. the cockatrice one is kind of cool but there's a quest in BBI that brings you there anyways

I suggest you restart and play on hard mode. The game doesn't get good until you reach I'd say at least lv.50 and rank 7 in a vocation. It'll be a bit tougher a grind, but in the end it'll be shorter. Especially if you have a friend with a lv.∞ pawn. It'll reduce the XP by half, bringing it down to as if playing normal, but the pawn will wreck shit and make grinding super easy.

Once you reach Grand Soren it starts picking up, you get access to the advanced vocations, get to choose your quests and do some free exploration, and most importantly the horrendous hydra cart escort mission is behind you.

Once you get to the city it opens up and becomes good, everyone knows the first few hours are pretty shit since its a linear path.
Once you get that fuck awful hydra quests done you're good to go. And it gets progressively better from that point on. Best part is that it reaches its peak once you finish the game and go do BBI.

You're not supposed to level to 10 on BBI, you dildo. Doing all of the quests available before the hydra escort should get you to 10 easily.
