You kill a boss, but get BTFO in the following cutscene.
Why do games do this? WRPGs, JRPGs, 50% of either of them will have this happen, sometimes multiple times.
It's really one of the few "tropes" that really piss me off.

It's PYSCH as in to psych someone out

you should email the author of the comic and let him know

fuck that weeaboo

Ask me how i know you're insufferable IRL

Because the story must continue, but there needed to be some kind of gameplay at the same time.

Ask me how I know you're a nigger IRL

>defeat an unbeatable boss
>get BTFO in the following cutscene
>game actually does acknowledge your win and rewards you in some other way

Sure, obviously. But then have the guy whoop your ass, or bust out some super move in combat to wipe you, not
>boss is staggering and breathing hard
>land the final hit
>in the cut scene, he's toying with you and your team is all beat to shit even though you weren't in danger at all in the fight

Nemesis?

I don't mind it if its like a battle that you lose even though you successfully do your part in it. But what I hate is when your bullet-sponge escort gets shot once in a cut-scene and now suddenly hes critically injured and it changes the pacing.

This, but also if you beat a boss that's supposed to be unbeatable, I'd like it if the cutscene itself is altered slightly, perhaps with the boss struggling before taking a cheap shot on you instead of acting like it had the upper hand the whole time.

>kill the unbeatable boss
>game immediately gives you a special ending for managing to kill the boss right then and there as well as an extra clear note on your save file

This is definitely my favorite subversion of this trope

>boss is super hard and I die after using all of my health items
>"oh wow, must be a scripted boss fight where I have to lose to continue the game"
>GAME OVER

Why does it matter? Why is it worth making a thread about? It literally doesn’t matter.

To be fair, it's better to get a proper winnable boss fight than just watching them oneshot your party

underrated post.

>objective: survive
>kill boss instead of just surviving
>lose

NOTHING PERSONNEL, KID

>OH NO NO NO HOW DARE THEY TALK ABOUT GAME RELATED TROPES ON MY VIDEO GAME BOARD?! A SMASH THREAD DIED FOR THIS
end yourself

Dilate

you know what is worse than this? In Kiseki, where you are supposed to be these strong ass Bracers, and everyone from minor criminals to eldery invalids manages to escape from you time and time and time and time again.
Estelle couldn't catch a fucking cold, dumb bitch.

seethe more, retard

>beat the boss
>instead of getting an unwinnable cutscene like normal and continuing with the rest of the gaame, you end up beating the game.

And then in CS you basically never win in battles, merely survived long enough.

that's our Rean, haha.

Imagine if he wasn't holding back?

The story must go on
I prefer that over being in a battle that was supposed to be unwinnable and not knowing it.
>getting ass kicked
>chug a bunch of meds
>finally get the cutscene when you die
>have to reset not to waste all those meds
Bottom line, JRPGs suck

>The ad said $3000 for lasting 3 minutes in the cage with Bonesaw. You pinned him in 2. That gets you $100.

How do I grow my eyebrows like this

This guy gets it.

>beat most powerful monster
>rewarded nothing

or

>beat most powerful monster
>rewarded even better armor
>nothing to use it for

Pick your poison

If it's the strongest enemy in the game, bragging rights are the reward. What are you going to use any equipment for?

For the next strongest monster they add in the $60 DLC.

Easy fix. Add a newgame+

>win the fight
>win in the cutscene
>even though the game told you that winning this fight would kill the world

>Beat strongest enemy in the game
>Get secret ending
There, it's now 100% better

DID SOMEONE REALLY¿?

Bruh, ay what age did you stop saying "should of"?

>bragging rights are the reward
I think that's true regardless, the real question is, when you have difficulty scaling that looks like
>stronger enemies > stronger gear > stronger enemies > stronger gear
How do you end it? It has to end with either one or the other. Some games scale near infinitely but those are even more problematic because it ends up feeling even more like a treadmill
