probably the best hack & swing cuh-razy character action game i've played. haven't played black or razor's edge, though.
the only real thing i don't like is how UT and OT spam is kinda the only way to negate a lot of incoming projectile spam. still, the feeling of combat overall is unparalleled and i can't understand people who actually like platinum games after playing ninja gaiden, plat games just feel floaty and shitty in comparison to ninja gaiden's almost rhythm-game-like combat

I replayed it a few months ago and it holds up pretty well. I was using the Xbox One X and it renders at 4K so even the graphics still look great.

I'd give it a 4/10, inferior all around to Black. Limited enemy pool, anemic enemy encounters (notice how every stage is largely limited to spamming either 1 or 2 different enemy types and that is it, even on Master Ninja), most of the move set is functionally useless, some of the moves are OP as fuck (claws forward Y, Lunar 360, etc) while some weapons are just ass (Flail), has pretty terrible bosses (fuck the tunnel snake, that metal slug dude in the subway tunnel, and the armadillos). NG1 and Black were made with passion and care, while NG2 was clearly a rushjob that was shit out into the toilet bowl to have a product to sell. NG2 was nobody's 'baby' and it shows.
And FUCK that segment where after you beat the bone skeleton boss where if you die rising up through the pit you have to fight his ass all over again. My Master Ninja Vigoorian-Flail only run were I died to one of the Gajas after him and had to face him again is probably the only time in my gaming career that I wanted to spike my controller.

Anyway this is pretty much one of the best games ever. Released around a time when games where transitioning into becoming onions simulators so it's one of the last great breaths of an era.
