I'm a little rusty, but isn't it a case that a creature only stops being a summon spell after its resolved and left the stack? Wouldn't the protection cover it?

An ETB ability doesn't trigger until the spell gas resolved. At that point it's an ability of a permanent and not a spell.

ETB effects only work when they hit the field, at which point it isn't a spell anymore. It wouldn't work if it said something like "When you cast [name], destroy target creature", but enter the battlefield effects work just fine.

A Dud (also Dreg) is a card that is generally not worth playing, either because its mana cost is too high for whatever benefit it gives, or because the benefit it gives isn't particularly advantageous. Basically, these are the last cards in the pack, and for good reason.
