because he is not god, he works for god, and for all we know those powers are bestowed upon him to do very specific things like nudge, but not interact directly with a timeline. At least until he breaks out in the later parts of hl2.

Not really. They only seemed to be a mild inconvenience for him which pissed him off. Also I don't understand why the vortigaunts won't say why he is bad.

After gordon has finished what he was hired to do, and he wasn't stopping time, he yanked gordon out of timespace entirely and put him in purgatory until the highest bidder got use of his services (in hl2). Time didn't stop, gordon just outright disappeared, which is why everyone reacts they way they do in ep1/2.

It’s pretty obvious he tries to be in the background and only target key characters to benefit Gordon or his employers. Because of this, it’s implied that whatever he works for wants people not to know about him and his employers true motives - meaning he needs other people to nudge his goals (like Gordon and possibly Alyx) into place to stay hidden.

in HL:A, the combine were literally harvesting the power of like 4 or 5 vortigaunts to imprison the Gman. I'd say that's significantly more than a mild inconvenience for him.

If it's true that the combine have a Dyson sphere, they are much more powerful than anything conceptual. Odds are if you have one Dyson sphere you have more.

I wondered if gman is just a future post-human guiding humanity through the challenges of extinction threats. His logic and behavior is still quite human compared to the way combine antagonize you.

The vortigaunts are not very combative, so the combine can capture them easily.
The Gman is not directly combative either, but he does have the ability to go wherever (and whenever) he wants, and make changes to the timeline. This makes him a threat to the Combine.
The vortigaunts can overpower the Gman with their power in large groups and nullify the Gmans power.

It's like a big game of rock paper scissors.
