It's scary until you understand how the AI works. Also the sound design is genuinely terrifying, especially if you're playing alone at night with headphones. I have a hard time coping with horror games where I can't tell if the sounds I'm hearing are diegetic or not.

This, not only did RE7 steal it's gameplay, perspective, scares (fans still in denial, not admitting it) it also stole the aesthetics, even when you're not watching a VHS tape it still looks and sounds like one. Must have been convenient for the sound designers when they could record the gunshots with a 2$ microphone.

Nu-Resident EvIl is first-person because Sony paid a lot of money for the VR.
