Yeah, because everyone just fucking loved all those pits of radioactive goo, lava, and being lost in the levels while enemies routinely attacked you from behind bars while you were forced to figure out what the fuck to even do next or where to go next.
I sure as shit loved being lost in samey-assed environments with bad geometry, unfair traps and some of the most demented bullshit the fps genre has ever created. (looking at you random cyberdemon atop the pit overlooking a pool of fucking magma taking potshots from across the map) i swear the good level design was contained to episode 1, after that it goes straight to shit and got progressively worse until the spider mastermind fight. the only thing that kept me playing that suffering simulator was the self-aware moments like when they put you in a room of 20 barons and a cyberdemon but also give you an invincibility powerup like they're saying "hey! wanna see something cool?"

Doom 2 didn't do much better but holy fuck everything after episode 2 of doom 1 is masochistic level design at its finest.

level design is actually just as important as the shooting itself but doom 2 levels wipe the floor with doom 1s levels, if you disagree go replay both games (episode 2 is aight though)

You have to admit that they aren't really a highlight though. Open maps don't really work in Doom if you ask me, you're too fast for most enemies when you have ample room to run around and the flow/pacing tends to be fucked even if there's obvious signposting. It's only really suitable for slaughter shit.

It's half the reason they're fun, and a big reason the NuDooms are real boring to play again.
