Why the fuck does she exist? Phoenix Wright really went downhill

She's the first sidekick in the entire series who's actually useful in gameplay and offers actual insight into the case. She was a welcome addition who's only problem was being so front and center in every case of Dual Destinies when people also wanted to see Nick's return to court.
Replaying the trilogy after Dual Destinies and Spirit of Justice was eye opening for just how fucking useless Maya was as a character.
>how fucking useless Maya was as a character
Wasn't that kinda the point to her character. She was useless to pheonix outside her spirit medium skills, but even without that she's great emotional support and can bring a perspective apart from the law.
Defending Athena is cringe.
I like her design and gimmick, but I find weird how even if she had a game all for herself she's still by and large a sidekick to whomever has to actually solve shit that day. Wasn't she supposedly a law prodigy?
Ace Attorney was in a really bad spot when DD released.
The last main series game (AJ) was quite a while ago and it also was not received well. So they couldn't just directly follow it. But they still couldn't ignore the game completely.
Old fans wanted Phoenix back, and marketing knew he needed to return if the next AA game was to sell well (Most people think of the series name as Phoenix Wright)
But as the first 3D AA game, and as the first AA game on the 3Ds they needed a place for new fans to be introduced.
Because of this you have the three Lawyers all supposed to be for 3 different fans of the series. Fans of the OG trilogy, fans of Apollo, and new fans
How are the 2 games that never got western releases? The ones with Sherlock Holmes.
I think they had a fan translation on youtube a bit ago, never checked back to see if a patch was ever made.
Really poorly designed character.
Like why does she have a jacket that doesn't go below her mid section?
And why does her shirt go over her skirt?
It's like went they designed her they liked how the jacket looked on top, but didn't like how it looked around her skirt and instead of just deciding between the two or redesigning the character the did this weird shit
This and she's also hot.
This worked for the first game but she quickly felt like an artifact. JFA didn't have anything for her to do besides getting kidnapped and while T&T is all about the Fey clan she's mostly used as a device for Mia to interact with current events until the very end of the games last trial.
She should have been transitioned into an office NPC like Trucy is these days, or Pearl in DD, after the original game with a proper legal sidekick taking her place in investigations. She's better suited in that role, only showing up when it actually has impact.
Sex appeal
That'd the dumbest fucking thing I ever heard.
All of the writing in AA is built around the banter between two people and Nick and Maya had great banter.
Just because she never mechanically does something doesn't mean she shouldn't be present in the game you fucking autist
Anime that’s why
I thought she was fine
I really liked the chapters with her as the playable characters. Wish there were more.
Two of the best sequences in the series are in 3-5 when Nick gets paired with Franziska and when Edgeworth is the MC with Gumshoe, plus the trilogy still offers Emma who's an extremely likable character in her own right.
The writing is BETTER when Nick isn't being saved last minute in trials by Mia, and that was Maya's main function. The whole cast has excellent chemistry and the series continued to have charming banter when she was cast aside for other cute teen girl sidekicks.
She's only as useful as she is written. Apollo kept getting all the major relevance and backstory, even more than Phoenix it seems, that it leaves Athena feeling underdeveloped in comparison.
She needs some kind of motivation after DD resolved her story because she really felt out of place in SoJ. She doesn't need to get the appollo treatment just a strong personal motivation. She's the best character in DD but the worst in SoJ.
This is the reason
Why is T&T so fucking good, lads?
maya is actually endearing though unlike Athena, trucy did nothing, and Kay worked because edgeworth just got to call her and idiot
no idea but my dick is grateful for her
Maybe they could make her go against the Organization that killed the Phantom? It feels a bit MarySueish but it could be an interesting plot
Honestly they can just invent anything even if it's out of the blue. Look at appollo
>oh yeah did I forget to mention I was royalty
It's that simple
Nick has a pre-established fetish for redheads with mental problems
They've got a few loose ends there they could pick up. We still don't know the specifics of how she met Phoenix, she just mentions that he really helped her out to some capacity previously and it wasn't elaborated on (maybe the cancelled train case was gonna cover that?)
She has the best expressions
Athena in general was a mistake and her introduction was the series' start to its flanderization and unwillingness to take meaningful risks. I understand that Apollo Justice was an unpopular game and that the games sell on the "Phoenix Wright" name, but the mainline titles are incredibly safe and have failed to portray meaningful messages and complex themes, alike nearly all of its predecessors - titles like JfA tackle just what it means to be a defendant, and AAI2 has a strong focus on familial bonds. DD is a game of "tell, not show". The dark age of the law is happening. How? Phoenix tells you in the intro instead of you witnessing firsthand the corruption, forgery, or blackmail of the system. The game doesn't conclude on a meaningful note - the Phantom is a shallow villain that maintains its mystique solely through the twist used to introduce them and is taken down, quite literally, by the power of friendship.
I don't think the series has a bright future and it pains me to say that. With Yamazaki gone, one would need a new writer to write a new conclusion to the loose ends SoJ left, and unless some radical risks are taken, if we do get a new game, it'll be just as safe as DD and rife with trilogy fanservice that means nothing because they do nothing with these characters.
Also finished my fat Maya
baste!
I still think that bit in 5-3 where Phoenix walks Athena through her first murder scene investigation is the only time in this series he's ever felt like a mentor character. Athena was a better attempt at a rookie character than Apollo was as well (though now that they had already introduced Apollo they should've just stuck with him really, and I say that as someone who still doesn't care much for the character)
>Athena repeatedly saying she wants to be Phoenix's "right hand woman"
Is she supposed to be a mail order bride?
Honestly, I'm not looking for deep philosophical subjects when I play AA. Not saying they can't be there and bring something to the experience, but the main draws for me are the humour and drama, DD was chock-full of both. What can I say, I'm a simple man with simple tastes.
