I wouldn't say it's awful, but it's lackluster. The music is serviceable but nothing more. It's mostly memorable because of how much you're hearing it. Honestly one of the weaker points of one my favorite games of all time.
Though 1.4 has changed that, both with the Otherworld soundtracks and its own additions.

I would definitely say Minecraft's soundtrack is definitely more impactful than Terraria's. Some of those old alpha/beta songs are so rich with atmosphere, amplified by nostalgia. Pump Sweden or Mice on Venus up.
