Let's have a thread about vidya that helps keep you relatively healthy.

I'm working from home while everything is shut down, so I wanted to pick up something to help keep me moving. I'm feeling pretty out of shape, so I picked up Ringfit, and gave it a go yesterday. WAY more of a decent workout than I expected. How does everyone else like it?

Other fitness games, or things that can be used as fitness games, are welcome. I have a buddy who used Beat Saber with a weight vest to work out, and has seen good results.

I'm starting to get abs from this.

For real? That's great, how long have you been playing it? Do you do any other workouts or dieting along with it?

Probably around a month or so? As for dieting, I'm just eating less than I need to gain weight. I have a protein shake occasionally, but I'm not eating to gain muscle mass.

How am I supposed to lose the flab from the sides of my stomach? Not obese, just skinnyfat

As far as I'm aware, you can't really target fat loss, your body may just carry weight there. Toning the area may help spread out and redistribute the fat around your middle though.

Is the game actually any fun? Why would you get a mediocre workout in a mediocre game when you can properly do both separately?

i think it's fun. it's also a pretty fantastic workout that works a huge variety of muscle groups based on body weight and resistance training. i don't think you're going to get ripped from ringfit or anything, that's what weights are for, but lifting alone isn't great if you want functional everyday strength

Build muscle. Being skinnyfat is a result of having little to no muscle mass.

It's more engaging than going to the gym for sure. I'd recommend listening to a podcast or your own music while playing it though. The OST is pretty average and annoying after a while.

That's great, I've gained a disturbing amount of wieght during quarantine, but my body's always been like that, it takes anything I give it and doesn't let go. How have you found the ring itself holds up? Being essentially a resistance band, I'm concerned it may not work as well after a lot of use.

It's fun, and I'd say it's better than a mediocre workout

All I have at home are dumbbells and a barbell so I've been doing a combination of squats, curls, shoulder press, lunges, and push-ups three days a week to start off.

How heavy are the dumbbells? You can do a lot of workouts with a good set of dumbbells and a decent workout bench.

Adjustable, have them on 10lbs and doing 3 sets of 7, but no bench.

Just find a basic db/bb routine online and follow that. Machines are good, but you don't need them.

Why is this game so expensive everywhere I look? It's like $120+

New copies are kinda scarce online, but check websites of brick and mortar retailers. I got it from Bestbuy for 80bux, and it shipped to me in like 3 days.

I think it's because it comes with the controller
Could be wrong tho

It comes with the ring, which is a really well-engineered thing.
It's durable as fuck and mine is still good as new after so many months.

Does anyone have any experience with weight vests? Do they actually make a big difference in a workout? I've heard wrist/angle weights are unhealthy, but that vests can help with some body weight exercises.

The game is more expensive because of the peripheral, but it shouldn't be THAT expensive. I did what said, but from Walmart

>relatively
relative to what? sitting on your ass sixteen hours a day, hunched over?
shit's a scam

>relative to what? sitting on your ass sixteen hours a day, hunched over?
Correct. Fitness vidya is rare, and some work better than others. Post some if you're going to bitch

>shit's a scam
It's good resistance/body weight training paired with fun vidya. Calling it a scam is baseless as fuck.

I don't own one, but it seems like a pretty niche market. Sure it adds resistance, but there are already like a dozen varieties to every bodyweight exercise, varieties that will increase intensity and target more/different muscle groups, so if anything the weighted vest just seems like a practice in staying with the same, tired routine.
Why change it up, fix imbalanced, train different muscle groups? Just add weight lmao,
That's my opinion. I'm sure it's super helpful to some people, but the thing has such a limited scope that it almost feels like putting blinders on. You buy it, then feel the need to use it, but limit yourself creatively.
I don't know about wrist/ankle weights, but it sounds like a disaster weighting to happen (ba dum, tss). You should definitely train your wrists, but not with any serious weight, let alone weight strapped to the shit.

tl;dr Seems like a military thing, and they already have mandatory Government-issued vest equivalents to strap onto themselves. Why would any civilian need to do weighted runs/push-ups?

i did martial arts for a long time, and knew a few guys who used wrist and ankle weights, and they will indeed fuck you up, never use them. Weight vests are good for things like squats, pullups, pushups, essentially workouts that are weight training using your body weight. They can be really uncomfortable and awkward though, I don't like them.

I really like it and would recommend it for just trying to stay somewhat active indoors. I held out out on RFA for months because I was sure it'd be another Wii Fit gimmickfest but after playing for a while it's actually pretty fun and effective. It might not be as effective as if you hit a gym proper but for a beginner, it's excellent at keeping you engaged with goals and by drip feeding exercises. The sheer amount of reps you do before you realise how sweaty and tired you are is pretty telling of how effective gamification of exercise is. I feel better and more flexible.

It makes me wonder what next generation's RFA will look like, maybe we'll have AI personal trainers.

I think a few anons have mentioned this already, but how have you found the ring to hold up after using it for a while? Does it lose resistance or sensitivity?

Still working fine for me after about a month and a bit. Sometimes I think all the pushing and pulling might be hurting my wrists though

mine's holding up fine after 100+ hours of use

The core issue being that people spend too much time playing vidya, if not in front of their computers/tvs in general. Ring Fit is like diet soda. It doesn't actually address the issue, the mentality, just replaces it. It's still an addiction.
>It's good resistance/body weight training
I'm looking at the wiki right now and it's an absolute laugher. Take the Russian Twist, for example. The demonstration doesn't even have the feet lifted, but claims it's a "core" exercise. Where's the resistance coming from?
It's absolutely a scam because it's $80+ for exercise variants, that is, unweighted, you should only do if you're an extreme beginner, and by week 2 you should be using weights, even if it's only 5-10lbs.
This shit is absolutely a practice in keeping people comfortable rather than putting in any serious work or changing mentality. This shit isn't worth the nickel it costs to produce that embarrassing ring attachment.
Even as an RPG, it fails miserably, like all JRPGs.
Being ignorant isn't a point of view. Stop justifying this crap that preys on people.

honestly I like ring fit, and really think it should get DLC

I'm on world 17, personally I found wii fit a little better on obtaining results but Ring Fit is a better game.

OK fags, will this thing help me if I'm a fatass who doesn't even eat much, but still can't lose weight?
I'm also fucking broke, so I have no money to buy Healthy Food(tm) and protein shakes or some shit.

not really, only rich people are allowed to be skinny, if you're poor you have to be fat or starve.

>fat ass that does not eat much
Lies, 110%, unless you are somehow honest to god magic and ruins everything we know about energy, spiting in the face of thermodynamics, making a joke of everything we know about the physical science that deals with the relations between heat and other forms of energy, you are just eating to much.

my guess? you are eating to much, and our collective knowledge of the world is NOT failing us. That being said, yes, if you eat less and play ring fit it will help

>fat or starve
>I have enough food to be fat, but if I don't eat any food ill starve
>perhaps I should eat half the amount of food it would take me to be fat? na fuck that, fuck rich people.

Posts like this remind me of the reason I don't listen to fitness advice from most people. Most people are fat because they spend a lot of time doing nothing, regardless of what it is. That's a given. And people who don't work out often may not know HOW to work out. Having some guidance is a good thing, and a lot of people don't want to google every yoga pose and not know what it's actually doing. Hell, most people who do work out all the time don't know what the fuck their doing, and are just following some writeup they found on the internet.

But the main thing with exercise is just getting up and DOING it. Even for avid weight lifters, or people who work out every day, they get fucking bored doing it. That's why they buy a TV and mount it in their weight room, or get expensive wireless headphones to listen to music while they do it.

My preferred method of entertainment is vidya. Working from home, i don't get to get up and do big workouts often. I've been playing beatsaber since quarantine started, and picked up ringfit 2 months ago, and it's been a great workout aid. Body weight workouts shouldn't be the only thing you do if you're serious about getting toned, but it will definitely keep the fat off and give you cardio.

This thread is about ANY vidya that helps with staying fairly fit. And clearly for some anons, it has helped. 80bux is a steal for most workout equipment, especially if the game itself is enough to motivate you to stay active. If you don't have any ideas for fun active vidya, fuck off, thread isn't for you.

yes, if you only eat 1 gram of poor people food you will get fat.
