Holy fuck I'm not even that fond of Naruto but MHA comes nowhere close to it even if you only count pre-timeskip.

Naruto was pretty cool. The latter half of shippuuden was kind of trash with all the kaiju and the super saiyan beam clashing and aliens and whatnot.

Pre-skip had some good stuff in it, but Kishimoto completely lost his ability to write somewhere along the way. After the hot mess that was Samurai 8, I'm forced to call him a hack. Really embarrassing writing, and you can trace it back to many parts of Naruto too.

You're right, I haven't read it. I did watch the entire series though, and unless the anime completely botched the source material in every conceivable facet, it was still an unmitigated shitshow. A host of terrible storytelling decisions and narrative subversions with no payoff, filled with shallow characters who either develop overnight or don't grow at all. A stumbling attempt to challenge the archaic formula of battle shounen series that doesn't care to consider whether doing so would actually benefit the product. Fortunately for Togashi, the fans eat it up like flies, and are first in line to mindlessly defend it out of fear that someone might lift the curtain on what a disaster their favorite thing might actually be.
