Why did they fuck up the art style?

They got lazy with it, instead they gave it the Dreamworks treatment.

They brought back David Wise but the art style was so sanitized and lifeless that his amazing music didn't fit. Some of the last levels in Frozen Dong were really good IIRC

I was disappointed by the reveal of Tropical Freeze because I wasn't much a fan of Returns. To be honest, I'd rather see a new IP from Retro rather than having them bounce between Metroid and Donkey Kong for eternity even as a Metroid fan, and it was incredibly disappointing to hear that they were pushed on board for MP4 five years after TF was released and they had nothing else to show for their time. I wonder what was scrapped in all that time.

correct, there was also a confirmed ex-retro dev on twitter saying they were confused that Retro were now working on MP4 and wondering if their previous big project got canned. Sadly, I can't remember what their account was called

Rumor has it that that project was already suffering from massive delays and was not living up to expectations. Basically, Retro was fucking up big and Nintendo bailed them out by offering them a chance to work on Metroid Prime instead.

Prime 3 concluded the prime games. Sylix's stupid ship, which leads to fucking nothing this day, doesn't at all mean it was left open. Phazon came and went like a good trilogy. They made Metroid for almost a decade, no one complained when they made something new and made the great donkey kong games.

The character that has nothing, literal no interaction to the phazon plotline with no relevance to the prime plotline across 3 games appears for no reason with no goal or rhyme and follows Samus, which his hunter lore implies he hates Samus and does that anyway, is an unconcluded plotline?

there was a kneejerk reaction when DKTF was first revealed, then later at the VGX's (what the game awards were named at the time) things got even worse when nintendo showed up just to show off cranky kong, who was already known to be playable in the game due to a leak beforehand. It probably didn't help that many felt there were too many platformers released by nintendo around that time (especially on 3DS), and nobody knew how good DKTF would actually turn out.
