I just thought of some more ideas:
Recruitable people, maybe have people have ship abilities (Such as a mechanic or a pilot that alters how things are maintained) maybe even a dr for better health benefits or easier removal of status ailments.
Ships obviously could be upgraded or buy/salvage others. I could see a lot of cool ideas of coming across a distress beacon and having a bunch of problems happening with the crew.
