Go Long if you want pure shelling, it has extra damage from charged shells
Normal if you like the lance-part combos. When you slam the lance, shell to unload all of them/do the Fullburst, it got extra damage on that
Wide if you like something in between. Stab-shell is the "best" combo. Has bonus damages to the basic shelling and Wyvernblast
Wyrmstake Blast (WSB) can proc statuses/elemental damage so use wisely
With Iceborne, you got a variation of WSB -- the Wyrmstake Cannon. When it sticks to monster, it will add extra explosions that's practically 100% extra damage. Also has small guardpoint window when loading the slinger ammo, so you can actually use it for a "counter"
Always slot in Artillery and eat for Felyne Bombardier for bonus shelling damage. Unless you're doing no shelling run or fighting Alatreon. While Guard Up + Guard 3/5 is also a no-brainer pick, Evade Extender 2 is also your best friend to add extra mobility. Learn to pivothop and you'll be the second fastest person with sheathed weapon.
Thankfully GL doesn't need much skills to dish out "optimal damage".
