What metroid games should I play? I want to get into the series
Prime one and zero mission.
/thread
I remember there was a chart with recommendations, if anyone has it can they post it? Anyways, I agree with but also throw Super Metroid in there.
Super is for the experienced.
What wrong with fusion?
Zero mission is the easiest one to get into, it's an updated version of the first game.
1,2, Super, Fusion, Zero Mission, Prime 1, Prime 2
Depends on if you're more interested in starting with 2D or 3D
Go primes 1-3 if you want to start 3D
Go Zero Mission > Samus returns/AM2R > Super Metroid > Metroid Fusion if you want to start 2D
Super is the ultimate starting point, then zero mission and prime.
For prime just play 1, 2 and 3 in order
For 2D, play Fusion, Zero Mission, Super Metroid then Samus Returns/AM2R
Super Metroid or Zero Mission
Why the fuck is Fusion optional?
Zero mission is the best entry point for the game.
this chart need to be updated, if only to contain Samus Returns.
Could include the various kind of playing order as suggested there
Start with zero Mission.
Do you want more of the ame thing? continue with
-Samus Returns
-Super Metroid
-Fusion
Did you like it but want something a bit different instead? go with
-Metroid Prime
-Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
-Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
Do you want to explore back the root of the series? go with
-Metroid 1
-Metroid 2
Do you want more? Those are games that depart a bit from the series but can still be enjoyable. Here you can go with
-Metroid Prime Hunters
-Metroid Prime Pinball
-Metroid Prime Federation force.
Do you want to play in the in-story chronological order? Go with
-Zero Mission (remake of Metroid 1)
-Metroid Prime (Metroid Prime Pinball is basically the same story, but as a pinball game)
-Metroid Prime Hunter
-Metroid Prime 2 Echoes
-Metroid Prime 3 Corruption
-Metroid Prime Federation Force
-Samus Returns (remake of Metroid 2)
-Super Metroid
-Metroid Other M (considered like a bad game by most. At best a game filled by missed opportunities)
-Metroid Fusion
I hope this was helpful.
I can't believe people are recommending Samus Returns over 2
What? Hell no!
You don't start with the best, and Zero Mission is the perfect starting point.
because it's a much improved remake
As suggested there
For anyone who has never played Metroid games, I would never suggest 1 nor 2. Those game are showing their ages and gameplay has much improved over it. they are worthy as historical exploration, but not as starting point.
Zero Mission is the easiest one to get into. Fusion too but that's more plot-heavy.
Super is fine for a newbie but expect to wander around lost if you're going in blind. Also some of its features (the map, pressing another button to run) seem kinda primitive once you've played Zero Mission
Prime Trilogy first, then Super, then AM2R, then fusion
That's one way of looking at it. I think people who want to play Metroid are interested in old games as well so they have some experience with 'guide' games like Metroid 1 and GB titles like Metroid 2 so it's ok to recommend these
AM2R is an even better remake of 2.
I think it should be more explicitly warned that Super Metroid suffer a little from clunky control and a less practical map, compared to Zero Mission. People underestimated the massive improvement of controllability fusion brought.
I don't know the best order to do them in.
In terms of mechanics I think the series evolved as it went along. Not saying Super is dated or anything but I found Zero Mission the most entertaining of the "2D" games and Returns isn't that much different unless shoving your arm canon down enemies throats is the bees knees.
At the same time I really think Fusion is one of those games that works really fucking well with the context gained by playing Super or Samus Returns right before it (There is no game in between, no siree).
As for Prime just do it chronologically. They're all good and there's no point in playing Prime last even if you consider it the best because it ruins the story.
Also avoid Federation force unless you have friends because it's boring.
Undoubtedly, Zero Mission first, continue to Super Metroid if you want more. If you want 3d emulate Prime 1, continue to 2 if you want more.
I wouldn't advise anyone to go straight from Zero to Super while skipping 2/Samus Returns. There is no reason to skip it.
Zero Mission - Remake of Metroid 1.
AM2R - Remake of Metroid 2. Arguably better than the official remake called Samus Returns.
Super Metroid - Continues where Metroid 2 left off.
>Arguably better than the official remake called Samus Returns.
I disagree. It's basically an improved gameplay of Zero Mission (which make sense), whereas Samus Returns actually innovate gameplay wise. and not just with the counter button.
2D: Zero Mission first, then AM2R if you can/if you're ok with playing an unofficial release. If not play Samus Returns. For all intents and purposes they are interchangeable. Anyways, after that play Super than Fusion.
3D: Just play the Prime games in numbered order. You don't really need to play the 2D games first if you think you get the idea as they are two pretty separate storylines, but it might be worth it to start with Zero Mission anyway just because it's the origin story and establishes all the main points the games will keep coming back to.
>It's basically an improved gameplay of Zero Mission
That's exactly why I like it more. I wasn't keen on the new stuff they added in Samus Returns or its 3D graphics.
As far as the 2D games go, you can't really go wrong with Zero Mission > Samus Returns > Super Metroid > Fusion. I'd say 1 and 2 are worth a try as well since they're pretty short and can easily be emulated, but they are rough around the edges. AM2R is also a great attempt at a fan remake so that could be worth trying as well.
The Prime games are a lot slower paced, but still great games in their own right. Prime 1 > 2 > 3 is the obvious way to play them. I think Prime Hunters is pretty mediocre, it's sole redeeming quality was its multiplayer and that's now dead. However if you want more Metroid Prime then that's always an option. It's a similar thing with Federation Force, although this game should be treated more like a spin-off than a proper Metroid game.
Other M is a mediocre action game. It probably gets more hate than it deserves due to the really shitty story and how different the gameplay is compared to Prime. Although they did make some really questionable design decisions when it came to the controls, mainly in regards to making it playable with a sideways Wiimote only to mimick the NES controller. It made the gameplay a lot worse than it should have been. It can be skipped, although if you've played every other Metroid game and want to play it for the sake of completion, you can always go into it with zero expectations and you might find it okay.
You should play Super first, I've found it has the most impact for new players. Prime 1 if you'd rather start with a 3d game.
